The event attracted more than 200 participants from 90 universities in five continents, and many from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> also took this opportunity to learn how to better understand and use the rankings. The two-hour symposium on March 25 was organized by the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/miro\/\">M\u0101noa Institutional Research Office<\/a> (<abbr title=\"M\u0101noa Institutional Research Office\">MIRO<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>The symposium featured two sections:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&ldquo;Understanding university rankings in a pandemic era&rdquo; involved leaders from four of the most popular international rankings organizations&#8212;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/\"><em>U.S. News and World Report<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.com\/\">Times Higher Education<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shanghairanking.com\/\">Shanghai Ranking Consultancy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qs.com\/\">Quacquarelli Symonds<\/a>. They introduced their rankings\u2019 foci, methodology and trends in the higher education landscape as reflected in their rankings&#8212;especially during challenging times in the midst of a global pandemic. This was followed by a Q&#38;A session from the attendees about how rankings can be used by universities, how rankings will adjust to the changes in admission requirements and how to communicate rankings information with prospective students.<\/li>\n<li>&ldquo;<abbr>MIRO<\/abbr>\u2019s strategies for tracking, sharing and using ranking information&rdquo; featured <abbr>MIRO<\/abbr>\u2019s staff sharing its strategies to help <abbr>UH<\/abbr> understand and use ranking information. <abbr>MIRO<\/abbr> demonstrated its ranking web page and the ranking tracking tool that <abbr>MIRO<\/abbr> developed to easily locate ranking information for marketing, recruitment and student\/community engagement initiatives. The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Office of Communications also shared its collaboration with <abbr>MIRO<\/abbr> to produce ranking stories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-miro-virtual-symposium-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"m i r o virtual symposium logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-137970\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-miro-virtual-symposium-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-miro-virtual-symposium-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-miro-virtual-symposium.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>MIRO<\/abbr> is committed to help <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and the general public make better use of our university\u2019s rankings through easier access to timely and quality ranking information,&rdquo; <abbr>MIRO<\/abbr> Director <strong>Yang Zhang<\/strong> said. &ldquo;We will also continuously make efforts to improve understanding between higher education institutions and major ranking agencies.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Recognition from major international rankings is important to us at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, because it recognizes the extraordinary talent and achievements of our faculty and students, and reaffirms our stature as belonging among the very best in the world,&rdquo; <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost <strong>Michael Bruno<\/strong> said. &ldquo;I hope that our <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa community will build upon the momentum created by the symposium and will fully utilize the major international rankings in order to showcase <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa&#8217;s world class academic programs and research strength across so many disciplines.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Rankings and international student recruitment<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Moto Tomita<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa regional director for international recruitment, attended the symposium. He regularly uses rankings information in his work with the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/admissions\/\">Office of Admissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In the age of extensive access to any university around the world, impressive rankings and stellar program reputations can greatly influence both undergraduate and graduate applicants to select a particular institution over others,&rdquo; Tomita said. &ldquo;International recruitment is highly competitive and should be attended to with the utmost care and follow-through.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s collaboration with major ranking organizations<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>M\u0101noa Institutional Research Office has been a leader in the institutional research community in the field of rankings.<br \/>&#8212;Robert Morse, <em>U.S. News and World Report<\/em> chief data strategist<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The ranking symposium is a continuation of <abbr>MIRO<\/abbr>\u2019s collaboration with major international rankings organizations over the course of a few years.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;M\u0101noa Institutional Research Office has been a leader in the institutional research community in the field of rankings&#8212;communicating all of the issues that relate to both national and global rankings to stakeholders at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa who need to be informed, and bringing rankers to communicate with higher education institutions through the institutional research conferences and the virtual symposium,&rdquo;
