Among the various credit and non-credit programs offered by Leeward CC<\/abbr> is an intensive, hands-on program in video production.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Leeward Community College<\/a> is celebrating national Career and Technical Education Month in February with an array of special activities planned.<\/p>\n

The activities are free and open to the public, and are designed to showcase how the college’s CTE<\/abbr> programs provide industry-relevant skills for employment in a variety of fields.<\/p>\n

“The activities planned in February will illustrate the rigor and relevance CTE<\/abbr> courses offer our students,” said Leeward CC<\/abbr> Dean of Career and Technical Education Ron Umehira<\/strong>. “By partnering with the business community, CTE<\/abbr> programs are investing in students’ lives with the latest technology and skills that will prepare them to become successful employees as well as future leaders.”<\/p>\n

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly one-third of the fastest growing occupations will require an associate degree or a postsecondary vocational certificate. At a time when job opportunity is so critical, CTE<\/abbr> programs in every community are ensuring students are adequately equipped with the skills to successfully enter the workforce.<\/p>\n

CTE<\/abbr> Open House<\/h2>\n

The CTE<\/abbr> Open House on Tuesday, February 26, offers the public an opportunity to meet the CTE<\/abbr> faculty in both credit and non-credit programs to discuss career opportunities, while exploring hands-on displays of the various programs.<\/p>\n

The open house will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on the Learning Commons Concourse.<\/p>\n

Career opportunity and program presentations<\/h2>\n

Throughout the month, career opportunity and program presentations will be offered providing information on how to pursue careers in nursing and engineering, Leeward’s Associate in Arts in Teaching program, and where the jobs are in today’s labor market. A “Discover Leeward Day” will also be held for high school students to learn more about the college’s academic programs.<\/p>\n

The college is also offering free tax help through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program<\/a>. Student volunteers from Leeward CC<\/abbr> and Waipahu High School classes and other community members are providing free tax help for low to moderate-income (approximately $49,000) taxpayers who need assistance with preparing their 2012 federal and Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> tax returns.<\/p>\n

Tax assistance will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through March.<\/p>\n
