A fixture in the campus, who was well respected and critical to a variety of successful programs, <strong>Ronald Cambra<\/strong> retired from the university in January 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island native served in multiple positions for the university, most recently as assistant vice chancellor for <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/oavcue\/\">undergraduate education<\/a> since 2005. In that role, he oversaw operations and resources for undergraduate programs, including campus-wide academic advising, first- and second-year programs, honors program, <abbr title=\"Reserve Officers Training Corps\">ROTC<\/abbr>, interdisciplinary studies, civic engagement, student success center, student learning center and other academic support services.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The University owes Ron an enormous debt of gratitude, and we miss him already,&rdquo; <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Provost <strong>Michael Bruno<\/strong> said. &ldquo;Ron taught us all what it means to be truly dedicated to the university and to truly care about the success of our students, from the moment they are recruited through to graduation and success in their careers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Under Cambra\u2019s leadership<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_137739\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-137739\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-undergraduate-cambra-retirement-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person at a podium with arms open\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137739\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-undergraduate-cambra-retirement-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-undergraduate-cambra-retirement-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-undergraduate-cambra-retirement.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-137739\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cambra speaks at an <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> accepted student reception.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cambra helped realize a number of highly successful initiatives, including the STAR degree tracking program, 15 to Finish, mandatory academic advising and a consolidation of program sheets to help with the understanding of degree requirements. These initiatives resulted in <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa increasing its four-year graduation rate from 16&#37; to 32&#37;, and national recognition for the campus\u2019s degree completion projects.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2016\/11\/11\/complete-college-america-honors-uhs-star-and-15-to-finish-programs\/\">Complete College America honors <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s STAR and 15 to Finish programs<\/a>, November 11, 2016<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cambra had three goals, &ldquo;Number one, to find ways to actively engage students when they get here to M\u0101noa. Number two was to find ways to form partnerships with students, and number three was to develop a sense of stewardship&#8212;that undergraduate students understand that this is their campus, that this is their basic footprint. And I think we\u2019ve held true to those three things and that has tied the work together.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Cambra added, &ldquo;A lot of those initiatives were having the right people who are so dedicated and hard working that it was easy working with people who see the same kinds of things that you want to do. Strong leadership in STAR, <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/mac\/\">M\u0101noa Advising Center<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/Transfer\/\">M\u0101noa Transfer Coordinating Center<\/a>, Honors, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/saas\/\">Student Athlete Academic Services<\/a>, ROTC, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/is\/\">Interdisciplinary Studies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/civic-engage\/\">Civic Engagement<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/ssc\/\">Student Success Center<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/PAC\/\">Professions Advising Center<\/a> and Student Success Services all are led by very dedicated student-focused leaders. Our catalog\u2019s work on the four-year academic plans and a new scheduler, have made it easier to transform the undergraduate academic experience for our students. Cambra presentation, sharing all the wonderful reasons why M\u0101noa was one of the best universities in the world,&rdquo; said <strong>Abigail Huliganga Hurgo<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa associate director of admissions. &ldquo;His presence at our events was always a big hit with our prospective and accepted students and wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if he was one of the reasons why students chose M\u0101noa.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Building an award-winning career in education<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_137751\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-137751\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-cambra-state-manager-of-the-year-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people standing and smiling at the camera\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-137751\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-cambra-state-manager-of-the-year-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-cambra-state-manager-of-the-year-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/manoa-cambra-state-manager-of-the-year.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-137751\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Enrollment Management team supported Cambra as he was awarded the state manager of the year award in 2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cambra was born and raised on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, and transferred from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in 1968. As a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Vulcan, he was student government president and led a campaign to establish the third and fourth years at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo, which started in 1969.<\/p>\n<p>He earned a <abbr title=\"Bachelor in Education\">BEd<\/abbr> in secondary education and a <abbr title=\"Master of Arts\">MA<\/abbr> in speech from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, and a <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> from the University of Washington. Cambra became a member of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s faculty in 1974 and was promoted to professor of speech in 1987. He was the chair of the Department of Speech from 1983 to 1992. In 1992, he became the Colleges of Arts and Sciences associate dean of academic affairs and student academic services, before becoming an assistant vice chancellor in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Among the numerous awards, Cambra was named <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s manager of the year in 2019 and went on to win the state manager of the year award the same year. In 2017, he won the Michael <abbr>C<\/abbr>.
