As part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cugh2021.org\/\">Consortium of Universities for Global Health (<abbr>CUGH<\/abbr>) 2021 Annual Global Health Conference<\/a>, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> presented the free pre-conference satellite session on March 9, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cugh2021.org\/satellite-session-7\">Global Health in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr>-Affiliated Pacific Islands<\/a>. The session drew more than 100 participants from around the world through Zoom. It was the first time <abbr>UH<\/abbr> has presented at the conference since becoming a member of <abbr>CUGH<\/abbr> in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;By virtue of its geographic location and longstanding partnerships with academic institutions and ministries of health in the Asia-Pacific region, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> is strategically positioned to provide a Pacific-focused perspective to the global health conversation,&rdquo; said <strong>Aimee Grace<\/strong>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/uhealthy.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Office of Strategic Health Initiatives<\/a> and lead organizer for the event. &ldquo;We are honored to have had the opportunity to exchange knowledge and resources with our colleagues around the globe.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The panel, organized by members of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System\u2019s Global Health and Social Justice Work Group in partnership with the <a href=\"http:\/\/UHealthy.hawaii.edu\">UHealthy <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> initiative<\/a>, covered key issues during the three-hour session, including climate change, chronic diseases, mental health, health inequities, health workforce development and telehealth. <\/p>\n<p>Speakers included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Maya Maxym,<\/strong> assistant professor, John A. Burns School of Medicine (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keawe Kaholokula,<\/strong> professor, <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> <\/li>\n<li><strong>Neal Palafox<\/strong>, professor, <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> <\/li>\n<li><strong>Lee Buenconsejo-Lum<\/strong>, associate dean, <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> <\/li>\n<li><strong>Chip Fletcher<\/strong>, associate dean, School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/li>\n<li><strong>Davis Rehuher<\/strong>, <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> <\/li>\n<li><strong>Sara Haack<\/strong>, assistant professor, <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li><strong>Seiji Yamada<\/strong>, professor, <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> <\/li>\n<li><strong>Tetine Sentell<\/strong>, professor, Office of Public Health Studies<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kristine Qureshi<\/strong>, associate dean, School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene <\/li>\n<li><strong>Christina Higa<\/strong>, co-director, Pacific Basin Telehealth Resource Center <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The session included interactive chats among the attendees and the presenters, which allowed them to connect with one another, share resources and knowledge, and learn more about global health in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr>-Affiliated Pacific Islands. There was significant interest by attendees across the globe in further engaging to improve health in the region.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>CUGH<\/abbr> conference provides an excellent opportunity to draw attention to the needs of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific region, while showcasing both the strengths of our healthcare community and our commitment to social justice and health equity,&rdquo; said Maxym, who served as moderator for the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> session. &ldquo;We were thrilled to have such a high level of international engagement and we look forward to further expanded partnerships moving forward.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System\u2019s UHealthy Global Health Workgroup highlighted the historical challenges and significant strengths of the peoples across <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr>-Affiliated Pacific Islands,&rdquo; said Qureshi, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/03\/01\/qureshi-elected-to-cugh-board\/\">recently elected to the <abbr>CUGH<\/abbr> Board of Directors<\/a>. &ldquo;Our ongoing collaborative efforts across the Pacific serve to improve the quality of life and health for all of us who call this region our home.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cugh2021.org\/\">The <abbr>CUGH<\/abbr> 2021 Annual Global Health Conference<\/a> continues with the official virtual conference taking place March 12\u201314, 2021, featuring a keynote address by Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
