At <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, Canevez will lead a study to examine the connection between communication technologies and the de-escalation of violence in social movements.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Recent social movement events illustrated the essential differences between violent and nonviolent movements. Movements that maintain a nonviolent core need to think creatively about their tools and practices, especially when faced with violence themselves,&rdquo; said Canevez, one of 59 researchers selected as a 2020 <abbr>CIFellows<\/abbr> recipient from among 550 applicants worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>The fellowship is awarded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/cra.org\/\">Computing Research Association<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Computing Research Association\">CRA<\/abbr>) and its <a href=\"https:\/\/cra.org\/ccc\/\">Computing Community Consortium<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Computing Community Consortium\">CCC<\/abbr>) as part of the Computing Innovation Fellows 2020 program. Funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\">National Science Foundation<\/a> (<abbr title=\"National Science Foundation\">NSF<\/abbr>), the program aims to address career disruptions experienced by recent doctoral graduates in computing due to COVID-19. The 2020 <abbr>CIFellows<\/abbr> program was modeled after similar <abbr>NSF<\/abbr>-funded efforts by the <abbr>CRA<\/abbr> and <abbr>CCC<\/abbr> in 2009, 2010 and 2011, which funded 127 fellows following the 2008 recession.<\/p>\n<p>Canevez, a recent <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> graduate of the College of Information Sciences and Technology at Penn State University, is under the mentorship of <strong>Jenifer Sunrise Winter<\/strong>, a professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/communications.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Communications<\/a> and co-director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/cis\/pacific-information-communication-technology-development-collaborative-pictdc\/\">Pacific Information and Communications Technology for Development Collaborative<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>CIFellows<\/abbr> program highlights the interdisciplinary research and collaboration between the social sciences and computing,&rdquo; said Winter. &ldquo;Richard\u2019s research intersects well with the needs of our campus and community.
