Headlining <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/a> were students <strong>Rachel Sorensen<\/strong>, Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (<abbr title=\"Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival\">KCACTF<\/abbr>) Region 8 winner for lighting design, and <strong>Christine Chang<\/strong>, regional runner up for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Award and recipient of the Summer Arts Scholarship Award ($1,500).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_135917\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-135917\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/manoa-theatre-christine-chang-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Christine Chang headshot\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-135917\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/manoa-theatre-christine-chang-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/manoa-theatre-christine-chang-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/manoa-theatre-christine-chang.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-135917\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christine Chang<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Instead of creating displays for a physical exhibition, entrants had to put together a slideshow\/gallery of their work and record a 5-minute presentation for the new online format,&rdquo; said Sorensen, a senior <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/theatre\/\">theatre<\/a> major. &ldquo;As soon as I saw my name pop up, it felt like coming down from the top of a roller coaster in the best way possible.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There was so much excitement during the festival and I was grateful just to continue to move forward in the rounds,&rdquo; said Chang, an <abbr title=\"Master in Fine Arts\">MFA<\/abbr> student in <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/theatre\/acting\/\">acting and Asian performance<\/a>. &ldquo;I had a ton of support from our department and I was just happy to represent <abbr>UH<\/abbr>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Four <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\">Windward Community College<\/a> students were recognized, including <strong>Manuel Moreno<\/strong>, who was one of nine students selected to participate in the Aspire Leadership Program, which helped him build skills to inspire the next generation of theatre leaders.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_135920\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-135920\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/windward-theatre-manuel-moreno-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"manuel moreno headshot\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-135920\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/windward-theatre-manuel-moreno-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/windward-theatre-manuel-moreno-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/windward-theatre-manuel-moreno.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-135920\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Manuel Moreno<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;We learned how to create our own hypothetical theatre company of our own and I learned exactly what goes into creating a theatre company that focuses on engaging Black, Indigenous and people of color,&rdquo; Moreno said. &ldquo;I also learned about what values and mottos a theatre company needs to reach out to its community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/programs-of-study\/theatre\/\">Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Theatre<\/a> Lecturer <strong>Taurie Kinoshita<\/strong> said, &ldquo;Our students are all freshman&#8212;often competing against graduate students. We are overjoyed and so proud that they did so well at the festival! More than anything, we are so happy that they learned so much and got to see what other schools are doing.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kcactf-8.org\/\"><abbr>KCACTF<\/abbr> Region 8<\/a> was held online, February 10&#8211;13, and encompassed college and university theatre productions from Arizona, Central and Southern California, Guam, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, Southern Nevada and Utah.<\/p>\n<h2>Design, Technology and Management Awards<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Rachel Sorenson<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa (lighting design, <em>I&#8217;m Lot Lane (a solo effort)<\/em>)&#8212;regional winner, advancing to nationals in April<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jonah Bobilin<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa (lighting design, <em>Sue&#241;o<\/em>)&#8212;regional runner up and presenter for two sessions of a workshop on lighting non-white skin which was well-attended and sparked fascinating conversations<\/li>\n<li><strong>Laura Nigon-Holmgren<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa (scenic design, <em>Sue&#241;o<\/em>)&#8212;regional finalist and winner of the Smithsonian membership award<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Awards<\/h2>\n<p>More than 220 nominated theatre students competed for the award.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Christine Chang<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa&#8212;regional runner up and recipient of the Summer Arts Scholarship Award ($1,500)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kal\u0101 M&#252;ller<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa&#8212;finalist alternate<\/li>\n<li><strong>Taylor Bogan<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa&#8212;semi-finalist<\/li>\n<li><strong>Marilynn Bellinger<\/strong>, Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8212;semi-finalist<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Aspire Leadership Program<\/h2>\n<p>Nine students were selected from Region 8. The selection of productions advancing to the national finals in April has yet to be announced.<\/li>\n<li><em>Oriental Faddah and Son<\/em>, by Lee A. Tonouchi and directed by Kinoshita, received an overwhelmingly encouraging response and positive feedback from the panel.
