Through a combination of solar photovoltaic energy, distributed energy storage and energy efficiency measures, <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Maui College<\/a> has reduced the campus\u2019 use of fossil fuel for energy by an estimated 100&#37;.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_134291\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-134291\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/maui-campus-net-zero-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial photo of photovoltaic panels\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-134291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/maui-campus-net-zero-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/maui-campus-net-zero-1-130x130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/maui-campus-net-zero-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-134291\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photovoltaic panels at Âé¶¹´«Ã½Maui College.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than 3,300 photovoltaic (<abbr>PV<\/abbr>) modules were installed, generating 1.58 <abbr>MW<\/abbr> of power, enough to power more than 200 homes annually and offsetting greenhouse gas emissions equal to 4,400 barrels of oil a year. The project also includes 13.93 <abbr>MWh<\/abbr> of battery storage.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This project speaks to our college\u2019s innovation, to our responsibility to our community. It provides a deeper experience for our students and shows what we can do to protect our values and our environment,&rdquo; said Chancellor Lui Hokoana. &ldquo;It also offers a living laboratory for one of the most exciting and dynamic career paths through our <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/ssm\/\">Sustainable Science Management program<\/a>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College is among the first campuses in the nation to generate 100&#37; of its energy from on-site solar photovoltaic systems coupled with battery storage. The project is part of a partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johnsoncontrols.com\">Johnson Controls<\/a> and Mau\u014d, a subsidiary of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hei.com\">Pacific Current<\/a>, and also includes four <abbr>UH<\/abbr> community college campuses on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/maui-campus-gnrc-net-zero-feature-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"aerial U H Maui campus\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-134292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/maui-campus-gnrc-net-zero-feature-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/maui-campus-gnrc-net-zero-feature-130x130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/maui-campus-gnrc-net-zero-feature.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Maui College follows successful energy use reduction efforts at Leeward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>, which became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/07\/19\/leeward-first-uh-net-zero-campus\/\">the first net-zero <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campus<\/a> in July 2020, and Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/09\/24\/windward-cc-sustainable-pv-energy\/\">reduced its carbon footprint by about 70&#37;<\/a> in September 2020. Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> are also on track to reduce their carbon footprints.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We celebrate <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College\u2019s achievement and look forward to <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> joining the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community College campuses that are making major gains towards <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s goal of becoming net-zero by 2035,&rdquo; said Erika Lacro, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> vice president for community colleges.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> became the first state in the country to make an unprecedented commitment to achieve 100&#37; renewable energy by 2045.
