(Photo credit: Ryan Tabata)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At 9:30 on the evening of December 20, the U.S. Geological Survey\u2019s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (<abbr>HVO<\/abbr>) detected a glow within <span aria-label=\"Halemaumau\">Halema&#699;uma&#699;u<\/span> crater at the summit of K&#299;lauea Volcano, indicating that an eruption had begun within K&#299;lauea\u2019s summit caldera. The water lake at the summit of K&#299;lauea boiled away with an effusive eruption and vents continue to generate lava, pouring into a growing lava lake at the base of the crater.<\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/weather.hawaii.edu\/vmap\/\">Vog Measurement and Prediction<\/a> (<abbr>VMAP<\/abbr>) Project continues to create forecasts of dispersion and trajectories of volcanic smog, referred to as vog, which are available in <a href=\"http:\/\/weather.hawaii.edu\/vmap\/hysplit\/animate.cgi?domain=haw&#038;variable=so4&#038;ftype=ensmax01\">real-time online<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Early data from <abbr>HVO<\/abbr> suggest emission rates of up to 30,000 tons of sulfur dioxide per day&#8212;significantly more than the 2,000 tons per day in 2018, prior to the eruption of the Lower East Rift Zone. Vog is created when invisible sulfur dioxide gas reacts with oxygen, sunlight, moisture, and other gases and particles in the air to produce visible sulfate aerosols within hours to days. Vog can produce significant impacts on community health and can create a visibility hazard for general aviation.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Sulfur dioxide is expected to be the main problem in areas near the vent, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Volcanoes National Park, P&#257;hala, <span aria-label=\"Naalehu,\">Na&#699;alehu,<\/span> Hawaiian Ocean View Estates; and sulfate aerosol is expected to be the main problem at locations far from the vent, Kona and farther north and west,&rdquo; said <strong>Steven Businger<\/strong>, professor in the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/atmo\/\">Department of Atmospheric Sciences<\/a> and co-lead of the <abbr>VMAP<\/abbr> project. &ldquo;The islands of Maui, <span aria-label=\"Lanai,\">L&#257;na&#699;i,<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Molokai,\">Moloka&#699;i,<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> will be impacted when and if the large-scale surface winds blow from the southeast.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in 2020, Businger and atmospheric sciences researcher <strong>Lacey Holland<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/07\/28\/funding-vog-research-forecasts\/\">received three years of additional funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency<\/a>, administered through the State Department of Health, to improve <abbr>VMAP<\/abbr>\u2019s ability to provide statewide forecasts of vog and to expand delivery methods
