Among the talks that intrigued and propelled us to the end of this world-shifting year is a University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa faculty\u2019s presentation on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/angelicque_white_what_ocean_microbes_reveal_about_the_changing_climate\">what ocean microbes reveal about the changing climate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Angelicque White<\/strong>, an associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/index.html\">oceanography<\/a> at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>), was an invited speaker at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/\">TED<\/a>\u2019s first entirely science-focused institute event, held at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. in 2019.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/01\/28\/uh-oceanographer-gives-ted-talk\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> oceanographer part of TED Talks first<\/a>, January 28, 2020<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>White investigates changes affecting microbes&#8212;the ocean\u2019s smallest residents that live in every drop of seawater and are vital to the healthy functioning of our planet.<\/p>\n<p>In her talk, White detailed her research on harmful algal blooms and rising carbon dioxide and ensuing ocean acidification, just two of the myriad problems facing our oceans.<\/p>\n<p>When asked what may have captured the interest of the 1.8 million viewers of her talk, White replied, &ldquo;I have to believe that the attention this talk has garnered is due to a combination of the general appreciation of the wonders of our ocean planet and the recognition that I am sharing the collective work of decades of ocean scientists.
