In the videos, the empathetic instructor tries to motivate her students in whatever way she can, starting with letting them know she\u2019s proud of them.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Personal isolation is so hard to deal with. It\u2019s so damaging, and it gets worse as time goes on,&rdquo; said Horst. &ldquo;What I\u2019m trying to address is that people are pretty depressed, [especially when] we don\u2019t get the same kinds of face-to-face interactions or smiles of encouragement.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In an anonymous survey conducted last semester asking students to provide feedback on how well their educators made the shift to distance learning, one student said about Horst: &ldquo;It was already an online class, but she provided very inspirational videos that were very helpful with motivating me to do my work not just in that class but in other classes as well.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Amidst her uplifting messages which include phrases like &ldquo;you\u2019ve done so well,&rdquo; &ldquo;keep going,&rdquo; and &ldquo;you can do this,&rdquo; Horst also points students into the direction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/careteam\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo Care Team<\/a>, a multi-disciplinary group that receives referrals about students whose behavior raises significant concerns about their physical or emotional well-being.<\/p>\n<h2>Expanding horizons<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_132695\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-132695\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/hilo-music-amy-horst.jpg\" alt=\"Amy Horst\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-132695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/hilo-music-amy-horst.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/hilo-music-amy-horst-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/hilo-music-amy-horst-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-132695\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amy Horst<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Horst began teaching courses remotely in 2017 in an attempt to make music classes more accessible to a wider range of students.
