University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> nursing students and faculty members participated in a drill to administer the COVID-19<\/abbr> vaccine as they prepare to help with upcoming distribution events.<\/p>\n

Eleven students from the School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene<\/a> (SONDH<\/abbr>) undergraduate and graduate doctor of nursing practice programs, and three faculty members, participated in the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Health (DOH<\/abbr>) COVID-19<\/abbr> Vaccination Program\u2019s first point of dispensing (POD<\/abbr>) exercise drill. A POD<\/abbr> is a large-scale operation where the COVID-19<\/abbr> vaccine will be delivered to large numbers of people, in a short period of time from a specific location. <\/p>\n

The drill was held at Leeward Community College<\/a>—the site of the first DOH<\/abbr> COVID-19<\/abbr> mass vaccination effort in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>. Teams will vaccinate Oʻahu<\/span> first responders there on December 21–24 and again on December 27–31.<\/p>\n

Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> recently received its first shipment of COVID-19<\/abbr> vaccine. The first vaccines to be administered from a POD<\/abbr> operation outside of a hospital setting are being scheduled now. UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa nursing students and faculty will volunteer in the DOH<\/abbr> mass vaccination POD<\/abbr>s to administer the COVID-19<\/abbr> vaccine and perform other roles. <\/p>\n

When the spring semester begins in January 2021, nursing students and faculty will participate in the statewide DOH<\/abbr> POD<\/abbr> vaccination operations as part of their clinical learning experiences. Nursing faculty have augmented the existing nursing curricula to include key concepts and skills needed to participate in a mass vaccination POD<\/abbr> operation.<\/p>\n

Health care providers from across the UH<\/abbr> campus are also volunteering with the DOH<\/abbr> UH<\/abbr> Medical Reserve Corp and vaccination POD<\/abbr>s.
