Nearly 40 students working on 25 projects presented their work virtually.<\/p>\n<p>The showcase, hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/honors\/\">Honors Program<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/urop\/\">Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program\">UROP<\/abbr>), is held every semester and is open to <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa undergraduate students in all fields of study conducting a research project or creative work.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The showcase demonstrates the high caliber of the work our undergraduates are capable of,&rdquo; Honors Program Director <strong>Vernadette Gonzalez<\/strong> said. &ldquo;It is always inspiring to see how students across the disciplines take ownership of their education, and work with dedicated faculty to produce original creative and research projects that are signature experiences of their time at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s projects ranged in topics such as arts and humanities, technology, marine, plants and medicine. The showcase was presented virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Fall 2020 Undergraduate Showcase event is yet another great example of how the undergraduate students on our campus are continuing to engage in faculty mentored research and creative work despite the immense difficulties imposed by the pandemic,&rdquo; <abbr>UROP<\/abbr> Director <strong>Creighton Litton<\/strong> said. &ldquo;The commitment and capacity of these students and their faculty mentors to confront significant challenges is truly remarkable.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Drone technologies<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_132465\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-132465\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-engineering-drone-tests-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"several people looking at a drone plane\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-132465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-engineering-drone-tests-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-engineering-drone-tests-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-engineering-drone-tests.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-132465\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UHDT<\/abbr> in 2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/me.hawaii.edu\/design\/uhdt\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Drone Technologies<\/a> (<abbr>UHDT<\/abbr>) team presented one of the projects in this year\u2019s showcase. The project aimed to increase the efficiency of search-and-rescue missions using autonomous waypoint navigation, target localization, image capture and classification, as well as to increase the success of package delivery for unmanned aerial systems. <abbr>UHDT<\/abbr> utilizes three subsystems for the project: unmanned aerial vehicle, unmanned ground vehicle and image processing.<\/p>\n<p>Team members <strong>Edmond Chong<\/strong>, <strong>Sydney Dempsey<\/strong>, <strong>Eliesse Hihara<\/strong>, <strong>Isabella Kotsol<\/strong> and <strong>Creselle Morales<\/strong> conducted flight tests to confirm the system\u2019s ability to autonomously navigate through set <abbr title=\"Global Positioning System\">GPS<\/abbr> locations, deliver a payload and classify captured images using <abbr title=\"Internet Protocol\">IP<\/abbr> software. Hihara said individual tests were often successful, but faced challenges when components were combined together.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Oftentimes we would test electronics individually and everything would work, but when we put them together we find a bunch of problems so we spend the time troubleshooting different things,&rdquo; Hihara said.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UHDT<\/abbr> began in 2014 under the mentorship of <a href=\"http:\/\/ee.hawaii.edu\/\">electrical engineering<\/a> Professor <strong>Wayne Shiroma<\/strong>. Since then, 120 undergraduates in computer, electrical and mechanical engineering have participated. In its second year of international competition, <abbr>UHDT<\/abbr> placed <abbr title=\"Number\">No<\/abbr>. 6 of 54 international teams and <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 3 nationally.<\/p>\n<h2>Directing a film from a cultural perspective<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-acm-urop-project-film-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person wearing haku lei \" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-132468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-acm-urop-project-film-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-acm-urop-project-film-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/manoa-acm-urop-project-film.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/acm.hawaii.edu\/\">Academy for Creative Media<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Academy for Creative Media\">ACM<\/abbr>) students <strong>Malia Adams<\/strong> and <strong>Mahina Smith<\/strong> created a short film about a young Hawaiian woman who learns about what her great-grandmother experienced in the early 1900s. <em>I Will Be Your Breath<\/em> is based on Adams\u2019 family and came to life as she listened to her family\u2019s cassette recordings. Adams recalled learning about the history that her grand-aunties shared about their mother, but all her history was shadowed by the history of Hawaiian colonization.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The one thing that really stayed with me while listening to the tapes, was the fact that my great-grandmother learned Hawaiian on her own, and I took that as another way of resistance in a period of time where all that they wanted was to erase us,&rdquo; Adams said. &ldquo;With this short film I want to let everyone know that thanks to those who were before us, we are still here today, and that we will not be erased.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Adams and Smith were mentored by <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> Associate Professor <strong>Lisette Marie Flanary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Custom solar water heater<\/h2>\n<p>Electrical engineering student <strong>Christopher Aguilar<\/strong> created a custom solar water heater that he hopes will eventually improve the efficiency of solar water heaters in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. The system includes a flat plate solar collector, heat exchanger and water tank. Aguilar\u2019s design is different from other commercial solar water heaters because it can collect and process data to help him determine the changes needed to improve its efficiency.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluations indicated that during periods of low solar irradiance, heat losses were appreciable when using a flat plate solar collector. In future experiments, Aguilar hopes to introduce nanoparticles into the system to raise thermal conductivity, and ultimately, its efficiency.
