More than 140 developers from 26 teams participated in this year\u2019s competition.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>OverEasi<\/abbr> team is made up of <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students <strong>Alyssandra Cabading<\/strong>, <strong>Eric Lam<\/strong>, <strong>Irene Ma<\/strong> and <strong>Shane Severino<\/strong>. They designed the program\u2019s tools around flexibility for the long term. The COVID-19 chatbot challenge was proposed by software company <a href=\"https:\/\/nichawaii.egov.com\/\"><abbr title=\"National Information Consortium\">NIC<\/abbr> Hawaii<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We felt that the chatbot challenge was the most relevant to current events within the world,&rdquo; <abbr>OverEasi<\/abbr> team members said. &ldquo;We created this application in order to hopefully contribute something to help our community through these turbulent times.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The project is still being improved, and the team hopes to train its chatbot to field a wider variety of responses to better fit the needs of the community. Team members are also seeking feedback. View the <a href=\"https:\/\/overeasi.me\/\">project website<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSfKiap-pzjMusGuSkQ-0-TxT3dWRsufpFz8Dt9r2gEDj4eLyA\/viewform?usp=sf_link\">submit feedback<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Game The System and <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii Shield\">UHShield<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/devpost.com\/software\/gaming-the-system\">Game The System<\/a> team members <strong>Matthew Sahara<\/strong>, <strong>Isaac Lee<\/strong>, <strong>David Liang<\/strong>, <strong>Frendy Lio Can<\/strong>, <strong>Spencer Young<\/strong>, <strong>Willy Chang<\/strong> and <strong>Keenan Lee<\/strong> took home second place and a $2,000 prize for their project to explore application designs that improve security for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa buildings and reduce personnel costs. The team\u2019s web application allows <abbr title=\"information technology\">IT<\/abbr> personnel to create and track appointments for visitors. Visitors are able to receive a <abbr title=\"quick response\">QR<\/abbr> code that will allow them access into the <abbr>IT<\/abbr> building.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UHShield<\/abbr> team members <strong>Tianhui Zhou<\/strong>, <strong>Yuhan Jiang<\/strong> and <strong>Weirong He<\/strong> won third place and a $1,000 prize taking on the same challenge as Game The System. The team built a mobile <abbr title=\"iPhone operating system\">iOS<\/abbr> app that allows users to manage <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa building access. Sponsors can create and manage their events, and invite guests by sending emails within the app.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the winning students are mentored by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ics.hawaii.edu\/\">information and computer sciences<\/a> Professor <strong>Philip Johnson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Due to COVID-19, this year&#8217;s <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Annual Code Challenge was held entirely online, and I was worried that the challenge would not live up to previous years,&rdquo; Johnson said. &ldquo;Instead, there was a record-breaking number of participants, and <abbr title=\"information communication sciences\">ICS<\/abbr> students rose to the challenge with their best finish yet. I think the quality of code is getting better and better, and can&#8217;t wait to see how they do next year.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>More on <abbr>HACC<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<p><abbr>HACC<\/abbr> generates proof-of-concepts by student, amateur and professional coders to benefit community and state agencies to support sustainability, feeding into <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s innovation ecosystem to promote solutions for community resilience, professional development, local job creation and building local businesses. <abbr>HACC<\/abbr> provides an expanded multi-week timeframe meant to encourage interaction between community teams and state department personnel, resulting in sustainable solutions that are matched with technologies and platforms in use or being considered by the state.
