(Photo credit: <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Coast Guard)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In today\u2019s modern world, it\u2019s not enough to just have a college degree; every year, the number of formally educated workers is growing. <\/p>\n<p>Students all over the country are looking for ways to beef up their resumes and set themselves apart from their peers. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gocoastguard.com\/CSPIScholarship\">college student pre-commissioning program (<abbr>CSPI<\/abbr>)<\/a> combines military work experience with education opportunities provided through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gocoastguard.com\">United States Coast Guard<\/a> for students attending college.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>CSPI<\/abbr> scholarship is designed for college juniors and seniors who demonstrate superior academic and leadership capabilities. Students who are accepted into the program are enlisted into the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Coast Guard and complete basic training during the summer. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_131471\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-131471\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Manoa-coast-guard-slaninka-heather-1-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Heather Slaninka in her coast guard uniform throwing shaka\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-131471\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Manoa-coast-guard-slaninka-heather-1-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Manoa-coast-guard-slaninka-heather-1-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Manoa-coast-guard-slaninka-heather-1.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-131471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heather Slaninka<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Participants will receive: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Full funding, including payment of tuition, fees, books<\/li>\n<li>Full-time Coast Guard salary as an <abbr title=\"3rd enlisted pay grade\">E-3<\/abbr> (pay grade ranges from <abbr>E-1<\/abbr> to <abbr>E-9<\/abbr>)<\/li>\n<li>Housing allowance<\/li>\n<li>Medical benefits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;I discovered the <abbr>CSPI<\/abbr> program by researching the different military opportunities that pay for college,&rdquo; said <strong>Heather Slaninka<\/strong>, a former marine science technician in the Coast Guard and a senior at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa enrolled in the <abbr>CSPI<\/abbr> program. &ldquo;I was drawn to the Coast Guard over any other branch because it is the only branch that deals with environmental response, a field I have always wanted to work in since I was a little girl.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>More on <abbr>CSPI<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>To take part in the program, students must be enrolled in a full-time bachelor&#8217;s degree program at a minority serving accredited college or university; a historically Black college or university; a Hispanic serving institute; a tribal college; or university. <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> offer <abbr>CSPI<\/abbr> opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>While in school, officer trainees report to their local recruiting office where they complete a minimum of 16 hours per month of Coast Guard duty. After finishing their junior year, <abbr>CSPI<\/abbr> students attend a three-week leadership training course in New London, Connecticut, followed by a full-time summer as active duty training at a new unit.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>CSPI<\/abbr> Program is beneficial to students\u2019 academic and professional careers,&rdquo; said Chief Petty Officer Alvan Welch, Recruiting Office Honolulu Recruiter in Charge. &ldquo;In particular, it allows students to excel academically by not worrying about college&#8217;s financial burden and guarantees a job upon graduation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>After graduating from college, officer trainees attend officer candidate school, a 17-week long course.
