The latest opportunity is a second offering of the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Community College\u2019s K\u016blia Scholarship to aid residents currently furloughed or laid off from a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>-based job because of COVID-19 impacts.<\/p>\n<p>A limited number of up to $400 K\u016blia scholarships for tuition and fees will be awarded to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents whose employment situations have changed due to COVID-19. The scholarship will help them strive to complete a college degree and pursue new directions. Applicants must be admitted and enrolled at a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community College for spring 2021, and priority will be given to those who are pursuing their first degree or industry-recognized certificate. <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/kulia\/\">More information and the application are available online.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first round of K\u016blia Scholarships, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/07\/22\/unemployment-uh-community-college-scholarship\/\">announced in July<\/a>, garnered 506 applications. The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges awarded 261 scholarships for one free class (up to 3 credits) and related fees at any of the seven <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges. The average age of scholarship recipients was 35. More than 18&#37; identified as Native Hawaiian.<\/p>\n<p>Entertainer and Kumu Roblynne Wailana Dasalia-Duarte of <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> and Cody Matsukawa, a former retail products and operations manager, were two of the initial K\u016blia Scholarship recipients.<\/p>\n<h2>Roblynn Wailana Dasalia-Duarte<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_131006\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-131006\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/system-kulia-wailana-desalia-duarte-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Roblynn Wailana Desalia-Duarte and son Makamae\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-131006\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/system-kulia-wailana-desalia-duarte-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/system-kulia-wailana-desalia-duarte-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/system-kulia-wailana-desalia-duarte.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-131006\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roblynn Wailana Desalia-Duarte and son Makamae<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dasalia-Duarte, 47, was working as a server by day and entertaining most nights at places such as the Lava Lava Beach Club and Princeville Shopping Center, while running her dance troupe Tamatea Nui o <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, when COVID-19 hit.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When COVID came, of course like everyone else, we were kind of worried financially because I was the breadwinner,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Her youngest son told her about the K\u016blia Scholarship. They both applied and received that scholarship and another one from Alu Like, which, combined, are covering all educational expenses for both of them.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I was excited, I was like wow!&rdquo; Dasalia-Duarte said. &ldquo;And I was telling my son, &lsquo;You know, we are so fortunate. We\u2019re so blessed.&rsquo;&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>She is aiming for the dean\u2019s list as she works on her Hawaiian studies degree online at Windward Community College and would like to eventually earn a bachelor\u2019s degree and a <abbr title=\"Doctor of Philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<h2>Cody Matsukawa<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_131008\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-131008\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/system-kulia-matsukawa-c-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cody Matsukawa\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-131008\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/system-kulia-matsukawa-c-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/system-kulia-matsukawa-c-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/system-kulia-matsukawa-c.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-131008\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cody Matsukawa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Matsukawa made the choice to go back to school when the Ala Moana Banana Republic store he had worked at for 10 years closed its doors permanently in June.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I had been thinking about going back to school for a while,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;But the catalyst for going back for me was losing my job.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>He enrolled at <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> and applied for the K\u016blia Scholarship when he saw it online on the college\u02bbs website.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The K\u016blia Scholarship is very helpful in taking some of the financial burden off of students,&rdquo; Matsukawa said. &ldquo;For me, the importance of having an education, having a degree, being able to differentiate myself from the other candidates that are out there is really important.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The 35 year old anticipates earning his associate in science degree in accounting in 2022.<\/p>\n<h2>Other resources available<\/h2>\n<p>While the K\u016blia Scholarship for spring 2021 is only available to students who have never attended a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campus, applicants may be eligible for other aid through programs such as <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/round2\">Round two, Stronger you<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to remember, with a degree in hand, graduates may well be on their way to a higher paying, more rewarding career. Interested <abbr>UH<\/abbr> applicants are encouraged to fill out the <abbr title=\"Free Application for Federal Student Aid\">FAFSA<\/abbr> form, and learn about eligibility for Pell Grants, Stafford Loans and other kinds of financial aid.
