Anchored by the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\">School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene\u2019s<\/a> <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Translational Health Science Simulation Center (<abbr>THSSC<\/abbr>), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/council-health-sciences\/hipe\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Interprofessional Education<\/a> (<abbr>HIPE<\/abbr>) program prepares <abbr>UH<\/abbr> health sciences students for team-based practice to improve health care quality and value in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Team-based learning will translate into safe, quality care for our community. <br \/>&#8212;Mary G. Boland, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Nursing Dean<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hmsafoundation.org\"><abbr title=\"Hawaii Medical Services Association\">HMSA<\/abbr> Foundation<\/a> has committed $1 million to support the statewide expansion of Interprofessional Education (<abbr>IPE<\/abbr>) at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and to establish the endowed <abbr>HMSA<\/abbr> Distinguished Professorship in <abbr>IPE<\/abbr> to provide the leadership, expertise and research needed to implement and advance the <abbr>HIPE<\/abbr> program. This gift will create an infrastructure that supports and coordinates innovative experiential team-based learning experiences, while supporting the expansion of the <abbr>IPE<\/abbr> program and building on the past successes of <abbr>HIPE<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This initiative is aligned with <abbr>HMSA<\/abbr>\u2019s mission to create a healthier <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&ldquo; said <abbr>HMSA<\/abbr> President and <abbr title=\"chief executive officer\">CEO<\/abbr> Mark Mugiishi. &ldquo;The transition to focus on team-based care will lead to improved patient safety and care, which will ultimately transform our health care system.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are grateful for <abbr>HMSA<\/abbr> Foundation\u2019s commitment to enhancing interprofessional education for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> students. Boland<\/strong>, dean and professor of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene. &ldquo;Our <abbr>UH<\/abbr> students will be better practitioners with the skills needed to work together in the constantly changing and dynamic healthcare landscape.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Preparing students for team-based practice<\/h2>\n<p>The World Health Organization defines interprofessional education as when students from two or more professions learn about, from and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes. Students from the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene, <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School<\/a> of Medicine, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sswork\">Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/publichealth\">Office of Public Health Studies<\/a>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu\">Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy<\/a>, and other <abbr>UH<\/abbr> health professions participate in <abbr>HIPE<\/abbr> learning experiences. McDonald<\/strong>, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo College of Pharmacy student pharmacist. &ldquo;By working together, we can provide our patients with optimal care.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The demand for effective teamwork and collaboration is growing very rapidly and there is a sense of urgency, beyond national accreditation requirements, to prepare students for team-based practice to improve healthcare quality and value. Building capacity in teamwork and collaboration is a key to transforming the delivery of healthcare.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2016, the <abbr>HIPE<\/abbr> program has delivered year-round technology supporting simulated learning experiences to prepare students for team-based practice.
