The event highlighted the training programs at the <a href=\"http:\/\/University of Hawai\u02bbiCommunity Colleges\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>Community Colleges<\/a>, in addition to the role that <abbr>CHW<\/abbr>s play in the community and the need for more employers and student practicum sites. The event was co-hosted by the UHealthy <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Initiative, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Public Health Institute and Healthcare Association of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.  <\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/04\/uh-trains-chws\/\">grant to support training 100 <abbr>CHW<\/abbr>s<\/a> over the 2020&#8211;21 academic year through the <a href=\"https:\/\/uhealthy.hawaii.edu\/uh-doh-partner-for-covid-19-contact-tracing-training-program\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Health (<abbr>DOH<\/abbr>)-<abbr>UH<\/abbr> Contact Tracing Training Program<\/a>. With 84 students currently in the pipeline, including 29 in a full-time fall 2020 cohort and 55 in a part-time year-long cohort, practicum sites and future employers for the <abbr>CHW<\/abbr>s are needed. <\/p>\n<h2>Impact of CHWs<\/h2>\n<p>The virtual event highlighted how employer panelists from The Queen\u2019s Health Systems, Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, Hawai\u2018i Pacific Health and DOH have employed CHWs and benefited by improving health care delivery, addressing social determinants of health, and realizing cost savings while improving patient outcomes. The event also featured practicing CHWs from West <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community Health Center, The Queen\u2019s Health System and Ke Ola Mamo.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our <abbr>CHW<\/abbr>s assist patients with applying to state and federal medical insurance programs,&rdquo; shared Geldilyn Ebbay, supervisor for the Complex Care Program at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health, when discussing the role that <abbr>CHW<\/abbr>s play on their complex care teams. &ldquo;[They] have allowed our nurses to focus on our patients\u2019 medical needs, and together we\u2019re able to prevent high Emergency Department utilization or readmission.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ashley Shearer, manager for Queen\u2019s Care Coalition, The Queen\u2019s Medical Center, said, &ldquo;Our leadership saw the results and incredible outcomes our <abbr>CHW<\/abbr>s were having\u2026by connecting patients to the right care in the community, our <abbr>CHW<\/abbr>s have driven down unnecessary <abbr title=\"emergency room\">ER<\/abbr> visits by about 50 percent and driven down their total cost of care (paid for by Medicaid) by about 35 to 40 percent.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The attendees included a mix of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> employers, educators, industry leaders, community leaders and <abbr>CHW<\/abbr>s. Attendees represented private clinics and hospitals, local and federal government, insurance companies, the pharmaceutical industry, telecommunications and education. <\/p>\n<h2>More on program, become an employer<\/h2>\n<p>The Community Health Worker training program is a 16-credit, five-course <abbr>UH<\/abbr> certificate program for candidates who have earned a high school diploma or <abbr title=\"general education degree\">GED<\/abbr>. The program is offered online, statewide through <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College.
