With <em>Ikaika<\/em> I wanted to create a piece that felt like a distant memory, a piece that strung together little moments that evoke a sense of both loss and understanding.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fp.hiff.org\/films\/detail\/welcome_to_the_lanes_2020\"><em>Welcome to the Lanes<\/em><\/a>, directed by senior creative media major <strong>Briana Smith<\/strong>, is about a woman who runs a program for special needs young adults at Pali Lanes in Windward <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>. I am a big proponent of personal narrative, so I&#8217;m very grateful that Rosemarie was so willing to share her story.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/466544114\"><em>Pua Warriors<\/em><\/a>, directed by spring 2020 creative media graduate <strong>Sophia Whalen<\/strong>, is an animated action film about magical girls who need to prevent a sludge monster from destroying their town on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island. The film is set in Whalen\u2019s hometown of Kailua-Kona.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;All the action happens on this very specific part of <span aria-label=\"Alii\">Ali&#699;i<\/span> Drive. There\u2019s <span aria-label=\"Hulihee\">Hulihe&#699;e<\/span> Palace, Mokuaikaua Church, the sea wall, <abbr title=\"etcetera\">etc<\/abbr>.,&rdquo; Whalen said. &ldquo;It\u2019s not common for films to be set in this town and I want the people who live here to see their home on the screen.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>More films<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/466535637\"><em>Midnight Showing<\/em><\/a>, a horror\/comedy short about an exhausted movie theater usher who is tormented by a phantom haunting his workplace, directed by <strong>Gavin Arucan<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/466538742\"><em>The P\u0101kal\u0101 Kids<\/em><\/a>, a film about two friends who are on the run from their <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> home and make their way up Waimea Canyon, directed by Arucan<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/466545011\"><em>Pua ka uahi<\/em><\/a> is about Pele, a young and hot-tempered volcano goddess, who has been challenged by <span aria-label=\"Kamapuaa\">Kamapua&#699;a<\/span>, a shapeshifting trickster in a race around <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, directed by <strong>Kalilinoe Detwiler<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/466513989\"><em>Su Lechucita<\/em><\/a> is based on Mexican folklore La Lechuza involving a mother who transforms into a barn owl taking care of her young son and preparing him for his first flight, directed by <strong>Molly Tapken<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/466713802\"><em>Walls<\/em><\/a> is a short drama about a teenage boy who is afraid of being transparent, directed by <strong>Justin Kimata<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/fp.hiff.org\/films\/program\/acm_uhm_showcase_2020\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> showcase website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Story Game<\/h2>\n<p>A new horror\/thriller film, <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/ondemand\/storygame\/466008164\"><em>Story Game<\/em><\/a>, will premiere at <abbr>HIFF<\/abbr> 2020. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> Associate Professor and <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> alumna <strong>Anne Misawa<\/strong> was the film\u2019s cinematographer, and <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> alumna <strong>Nikki Lau<\/strong> was one of the film\u2019s producers. <em>Story Game<\/em> features three students camping on a remote beach during spring break. After meeting a park ranger, they all make a bet to tell the scariest story. The three scary stories are infused with Pan-Pacific flavor as they were shot in Japan and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Story Game<\/em> will be featured online, and in-person at an Ala Moana drive-in event (November 5) and at Olino by Consolidated Theatres (November 15). For more information and to purchase tickets, <a href=\"https:\/\/fp.hiff.org\/films\/detail\/story_game_2020\">see <abbr>HIFF<\/abbr>\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Hawaiian Soul<\/h2>\n<p>A film written and directed by <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> alumnus <strong><span aria-label=\"\u0100ina\">&#699;\u0100ina<\/span> Paikai<\/strong> and produced by <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> alumnus <strong>Kaliko <span aria-label=\"Maii\">Ma&#699;i&#699;i<\/span><\/strong> will premiere at <abbr>HIFF<\/abbr> 2020. <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/466522560\"><em>Hawaiian Soul<\/em><\/a> tells the story of George Helm, a musician who used his gift of song to become a leader in the movement to protect Hawaiian land and Native Hawaiian rights.<\/p>\n<p><em>Hawaiian Soul<\/em> will be featured online, and in-person at a Windward Mall drive-in event (November 22) and at Consolidated Theatres Ward (November 29).
