(Photo credit: Eric Koch)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nearly every organism hosts a collection of symbiotic microbes&#8212;a microbiome. It is now recognized that microbiomes are major drivers of health in all animals, including humans, and that these symbiotic systems often exhibit strong daily rhythms.<\/p>\n<p>New research led by <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> scientists revealed that, in the mutually beneficial relationship between with the Hawaiian bobtail squid, <em>Euprymna scolopes<\/em>, and the luminescent bacterium, <em>Vibrio fischeri<\/em>, an immune protein called &ldquo;macrophage migration inhibitory factor&rdquo; or &ldquo;MIF,&rdquo; is the maestro of daily rhythms.<\/p>\n<p>This finding, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2020\/10\/15\/2016864117\">published in the <em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences<\/em><\/a>, could provide important clues on factors affecting human microbiome rhythms, as the <abbr title=\"macrophage migration inhibitory factor\">MIF<\/abbr> protein is also found in abundance in mammalian symbiotic tissues.<\/p>\n<p>To survive, the nocturnal Hawaiian bobtail squid depends on V. fischeri, which gives it the ability to mimic moonlight on the surface of the ocean and deceive monk seals and other predators, as it forages for food. (Photo credit: Eric Koch)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The research team, led by <strong>Eric Koch<\/strong>, who was a graduate researcher at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbrc.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Biosciences Research Center<\/a> (<abbr>PBRC<\/abbr>) in the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>) at the time of the study, determined the squid regulates production of <abbr>MIF<\/abbr> as a way to control the movement of specialized immune cells, called hemocytes, which provide chitin for bacteria to feed on.<\/p>\n<p>At night, when the team found <abbr>MIF<\/abbr> was low in the squid\u2019s light organ, hemocytes were allowed into the regions where the bacteria reside and chitin was delivered. During the day, <abbr>MIF<\/abbr> was very high, which inhibits the hemocytes from entering the symbiotic tissues and dumping their chitin at the wrong time.<\/p>\n<p>This cycling of nutrients has cascading effects on all of the other rhythms associated with the symbiotic system&#8212;perhaps affecting overall health, development or reproduction.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/03\/05\/bacteria-hawaiian-bobtail-squid\/\">Glowing bacteria in Hawaiian bobtail squid cause changes throughout host<\/a>, March 5, 2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Characterizing animal microbiomes<\/h2>\n<p>For nearly three decades, <abbr>PBRC<\/abbr> professors <strong>Margaret McFall-Ngai<\/strong> and <strong>Edward Ruby<\/strong> have used the squid\u2013bacterial symbiosis system to characterize animal microbiomes.
