  {"id":128846,"date":"2020-10-16T10:00:01","date_gmt":"2020-10-16T20:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=128846"},"modified":"2020-10-16T10:59:11","modified_gmt":"2020-10-16T20:59:11","slug":"1m-for-honolulu-cc-trio-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/10\/16\/1m-for-honolulu-cc-trio-program\/","title":{"rendered":"$1<abbr title=\"Million\">M<\/abbr> to Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> to support low-income, 1st gen students"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/honolulu-wide-exterior.jpg\" alt=\"Exterior of Honolulu Community College building\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-68120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/honolulu-wide-exterior.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/honolulu-wide-exterior-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Department of Education has awarded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a>\u2019s TRIO-Student Success Services (<abbr>TRIO-SSS<\/abbr>) program a five-year grant totaling $1,370,685 to support eligible students in achieving their academic goals.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Given this time of uncertainty, we are grateful to receive continued funding to support eligible Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> students on their academic journey,&rdquo; said <strong>Jolene Suda<\/strong>, <abbr>TRIO-SSS<\/abbr> project director. &ldquo;As a former participant and graduate of a <abbr>TRIO-SSS<\/abbr> program, I know firsthand the difference <abbr>TRIO<\/abbr> programs make and have witnessed the life-changing effects of the program on our students.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>TRIO-SSS<\/abbr> is federally funded through the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Department of Education. <abbr>TRIO<\/abbr> stands for the first three programs created to assist and support low-income individuals, first-generation college students and individuals with disabilities with matriculation through the academic pathway beginning at middle school to post-baccalaureate programs.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>TRIO-SSS<\/abbr> program provides a full-range of academic support, career guidance, transfer planning and professional development opportunities to qualified students. Those students receive individualized assessment, dedicated advising, small group tutoring, mentoring, cultural and educational workshops, club and community service activities and other academic support at no cost.<\/p>\n<p>Students who participate in the program show higher persistence and graduation rates, transfer to a four-year campus in greater numbers and feel more supported versus their peers who don\u2019t participate in the program. Wen, who is working for a major construction company as a preconstruction engineer estimator, said, &ldquo;The <abbr>TRIO<\/abbr> program has been instrumental for me to complete my college career. They provided guidance that I didn&#8217;t even know I needed. As a first-generation college student, this was a big accomplishment for my family and me. The program also instills skills such as leadership, initiative and team mentality that I continue to grow and use in my professional career.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and <abbr>TRIO<\/abbr> program graduate <strong>Jan Vierra<\/strong> earned her associate degree in cosmetology. As a non-traditional college student, Vierra said that the &ldquo;<abbr>TRIO-SSS<\/abbr> program was my support, my lifeline, and they gave me a sense of being a part of a family. I always had a place to study, get tutored, and when I needed support or encouragement, <abbr>TRIO-SSS<\/abbr> was always there. Because of <abbr>TRIO-SSS<\/abbr>, I was able to graduate in a timely manner, and due to one of the transfer college events, I realized I wanted to earn a four-year degree. I would highly recommend this program to all students that qualify. I am so grateful for <abbr>TRIO-SSS<\/abbr>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>She went on to graduate with her bachelor&#8217;s degree in human development and family services from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and is currently employed as the academic support coordinator for the <abbr>TRIO-SSS<\/abbr> program at Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JoAnn Tuifanu<\/strong>, another graduate of Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and the <abbr>TRIO<\/abbr> program, earned her associate degree in liberal arts. As a non-traditional, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Island student, Tuifanu said, &ldquo;TRIO has been a home away from home for me. TRIO\u2019s caring staff, tutors and coaches helped me build the academic foundation needed to achieve my associate, bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degree.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Upon attaining her degree from Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, Tuifanu transferred to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, where she went on to earn a bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degree in social work.
