  {"id":128453,"date":"2020-10-08T16:06:34","date_gmt":"2020-10-09T02:06:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=128453"},"modified":"2021-03-31T12:51:21","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T22:51:21","slug":"center-on-disability-studies-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/10\/08\/center-on-disability-studies-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"$9.6<abbr title=\"Million\">M<\/abbr> for Native Hawaiian education programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_128383\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-128383\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/manoa-coe-cdsgrant.jpg\" alt=\"students at fishpond\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-128383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/manoa-coe-cdsgrant.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/manoa-coe-cdsgrant-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/manoa-coe-cdsgrant-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-128383\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kapa&#699;a High School Project Ho&#699;oku&#699;i <abbr title=\"Roman Numeral Three\">III<\/abbr> students engaged in service learning at Alekoko fishpond restoration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Faculty members at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa College of Education <a href=\"https:\/\/cds.coe.hawaii.edu\">Center on Disability Studies<\/a> (<abbr>CDS<\/abbr>) were awarded $9.6 million by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/programs\/nathawaiian\/index.html\">Native Hawaiian Education Program<\/a> (<abbr>NHEP<\/abbr>) for a three-year period to develop innovative education programs to assist Native Hawaiians.<\/p>\n<p>More than $2 million each were awarded to interim <abbr>CDS<\/abbr> Associate Director <strong>Hye-Jin Park<\/strong>, interim <abbr>CDS<\/abbr> Director <strong>Kiriko Takahashi<\/strong>, <abbr>CDS<\/abbr> Assistant Specialist <strong>Lisa Uyehara<\/strong> and <abbr>CDS<\/abbr> Assistant Specialist <strong>Eric Folk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Project H&#333;k&#363;lani<\/em>, under the direction of Park, is a culturally responsive, strength and work-based <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering and mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> enrichment and college transition project. Aiming to serve Native Hawaiian high school students with and without disabilities on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span>, the project\u2019s goal is to create a seamless and supportive <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> education pipeline for underserved youth to bolster their aspirations to enter into postsecondary <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> fields.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Through this project, we hope to better support the career development of these underrepresented youths and increase the likelihood of their becoming future &lsquo;shining stars&rsquo; in <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> fields,&rdquo; Park said. &ldquo;To achieve this goal, we will develop and implement a research-based H&#333;k&#363;lani model, which includes academic enrichment, mentoring, college transition, paid internships and <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> engagement.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Takahashi is the project director of <em>Ka Pilina <span aria-label=\"Noeau\">No&#699;eau<\/span> <abbr title=\"Roman Numeral Two\">II<\/abbr><\/em>, which is a continuation of two previous grant projects, Ka Pilina: AIM Together and Ka Pilina <span aria-label=\"Noeau.\">No&#699;eau.<\/span> The current version, based on community request, gives additional attention to students with disabilities and students who may be disengaged or struggling in school.<\/p>\n<p>Takahashi stated, &ldquo;The new award is great news to our team and our project partners, ALU LIKE, <abbr title=\"Incorporated\">Inc.<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s Department of Mathematics. We are delighted to be able to continue refining the activities we have developed together to better meet the needs of our students, parents and teachers. With this new iteration, we are also excited to strengthen our partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. We hope to continue building upon our network to nurture <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> outcomes of Native Hawaiian students, assisting them to ultimately contribute to our <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> workforce in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><em>Project <span aria-label=\"Hookui\">Ho&#699;oku&#699;i<\/span> <abbr title=\"Roman Numeral Four\">IV<\/abbr>: <span aria-label=\"Ohana\">&#699;Ohana<\/span> L&#333;kahi<\/em>, under the direction of Uyehara, will engage families, students and the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education (<abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr>) in cultivating a post-secondary education-bound culture within the Native Hawaiian community statewide. Based on nine years of research, supporting more than 1,000 Native Hawaiian and at-risk students, as well as students with disabilities, this new iteration of the project seeks to expand its support for students and the <abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr> by including a more active role for families.<\/p>\n<p>Folk, along with <abbr>CDS<\/abbr> Junior Specialist <strong>Sean Nagamatsu<\/strong> and Native Hawaiian Cultural and Educational Specialist <strong>Rebecca <span aria-label=\"Ilima\">&#699;Ilima<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Kaanehe\">Ka&#699;anehe<\/span><\/strong>, comprise the K&#363;lia Support Project team, currently working across the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community College system to support and retain Native Hawaiian students who are at risk of school failure. This initiative will expand and adapt direct student support capacity to add an emphasis on <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> education.
