The Hilo High School graduate\u2019s mother Dorothy taught at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College, her father was an English professor at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo. She credits him for encouraging her curiosity in science. As a teenager, that interest led to an opportunity to work in a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo lab.
