An interdisciplinary curriculum, <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1_f0-IoiKEvaQduGKksZirkDIUF3PVJlI\/view\">COVID-19, the Latest Hawaiian Epidemic: Educating for Health, Responsibility, and Resilience Through a Place-Based, Cultural Lens<\/a>, that compares and contrasts Hawaiian historical timelines and science phenomena associated with COVID-19, is the brainchild of <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/cs\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa College of Education Curriculum Studies<\/a> Professor <strong>Pauline Chinn<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_128148\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-128148\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/manoa-coe-chinn.jpg\" alt=\"female\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-128148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/manoa-coe-chinn.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/manoa-coe-chinn-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/manoa-coe-chinn-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-128148\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pauline Chinn<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The curriculum has multiple purposes: to understand COVID-19 in historical contexts, examine leaders\u2019 actions in a crisis, and teach students about ways to slow the spread of SARS-<abbr>CoV<\/abbr>-2, the virus causing COVID-19. Chinn, graduate students <strong>Kaleolani Hanohano<\/strong> and <strong>Alison Yasuoka<\/strong>, and Hawaiian translator graduate assistants <strong>Riley Wells<\/strong> and <strong>Kyle Nakatsuka<\/strong>, developed a series of lessons that include: hands-on activities, simulations, models, metrics, interactive discussions, historical resources, Hawaiian language newspaper articles, and up-to-date information on COVID-19 that can be used in schools and communities.<\/p>\n<p>Hanohano\u2019s lesson focuses on Princess <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\u2019s\">Lili&#699;uokalani\u2019s<\/span> 1881 quarantine of <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> that stopped the spread of smallpox to other islands. <span aria-label=\"Liliuokalani\u2019s\">Lili&#699;uokalani\u2019s<\/span> decisive action to shut down parts of the economy in favor of health is consistent with the Hawaiian Kingdom\u2019s response to introduced diseases and cultural practices embedded in kapu aloha.<\/p>\n<p>The COVID-19 curriculum and a series of interactive workshops are made possible with support from a <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/kahuaao\/\">National Science Foundation (<abbr>NSF<\/abbr>) award<\/a> for teacher leadership and place-based curriculum development. With support from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.papaolalokahi.org\/\">Papa Ola Lokahi<\/a> and <abbr>NSF<\/abbr>, Yasuoka and Wells also created the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kupaacollective.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"KUpaa\">K&#363;pa&#699;a<\/span> Collective<\/a> website to empower community members with the science, public health, educational and community knowledge to move beyond COVID-19 toward healthy, resilient futures.<\/p>\n<h2>Education-public health collaboration<\/h2>\n<p>The potential of K&#8211;12 educators as community health partners led to COVID-19 presentations with <strong>Alika Maunakea<\/strong>, an associate professor at the <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>)\u2019s Department of Anatomy, Biochemistry &#38; Physiology and the Institute for Biogenesis Research, his aunt Kukui Maunakea-Forth, founder and executive director of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maoorganicfarms.org\/our_farm\"><span aria-label=\"MAO\">MA&#699;O<\/span> Organic Farms<\/a>, and <strong>Ruben Juarez<\/strong>, professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences\u2019<\/a> economics department and a research fellow in the <a href=\"https:\/\/uhero.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Economic Research Organization<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to address COVID-19 testing among underserved and\/or vulnerable populations, a team consisting of: <strong>May Okihiro<\/strong>, an associate pediatrics professor at <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>, <strong>Marjorie Mau<\/strong>, a professor at <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s Center for Native and Pacific Health Disparities Research, Maunakea, Juarez and Chinn, will support a community-led program called the Pacific Alliance Against COVID-19 (<abbr>PAAC<\/abbr>). <abbr>PAAC<\/abbr> will empower educators and students as community health workers to assess their <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span>&#8216;s risk for COVID-19 by age, ethnicity, gender, essential service work and health risk factors, and more effectively connect with public health services, especially those provided by the <abbr>AHARO<\/abbr> Community Health Centers including <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Coast Comprehensive Health Center, Waim&#257;nalo Health Center, Bay Clinic and H&#257;m&#257;kua-Kohala Health Center on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, and <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span> Health Center.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers and students can play an important role in public health education.
