{"id":128145,"date":"2020-10-02T11:48:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-02T21:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=128145"},"modified":"2024-03-15T13:49:46","modified_gmt":"2024-03-15T23:49:46","slug":"fellowship-elevates-professor-creative-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/10\/02\/fellowship-elevates-professor-creative-media\/","title":{"rendered":"&lsquo;Unreal&rsquo; fellowship elevates professor to creative media industry forefront"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/461521292\" title=\"vimeo video player\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>A University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/acm.hawaii.edu\/\">Academy for Creative Media<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Academy for Creative Media\">ACM<\/abbr>) professor\u2019s experience at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrealengine.com\/fellowship\">Unreal Fellowship in Virtual Production<\/a> propelled her knowledge and instruction to the cutting edge of the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Professor <strong>Brittany Biggs<\/strong> recently completed the highly competitive, 30-day fellowship hosted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epicgames.com\/\">Epic Games<\/a>, a leading gaming company that created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unrealengine.com\/\">Unreal Engine<\/a>, a gaming engine used for popular video games, such as Fortnite, and is finding applications in other industries, including architecture, film and television content creation and more.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_128171\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-128171\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/manoa-acm-brittany-biggs-unreal-fellowship-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"headshot of Brittany Biggs\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-128171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/manoa-acm-brittany-biggs-unreal-fellowship-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/manoa-acm-brittany-biggs-unreal-fellowship-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/manoa-acm-brittany-biggs-unreal-fellowship.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-128171\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brittany Biggs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than 6,000 film, <abbr title=\"visual effects\">VFX<\/abbr> (visual effects) and animation professionals applied and only 102 were selected. The goal of the fellowship\u2019s blended learning experience was to enable its participants to &ldquo;develop a strong command of state-of-the-art virtual production tools, and foster the next generation of teams in the emerging field of real-time production.&rdquo; Virtual production is now heavily relied on by Hollywood to continue film production during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even prior to the pandemic, Disney found success utilizing real-time workflows with Unreal Engine during the production of <em>The Mandalorian<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;To say the Unreal Fellowship in Virtual Production was one of the most amazing experiences is an understatement,&rdquo; Biggs said. &ldquo;I\u2019m astounded how much I learned in only four weeks, and I\u2019m excited to incorporate Unreal and real-time workflows into my research\/creative work as well as our <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> curriculum.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>For the final fellowship project, Biggs was required to create a 30&#8211;60 second chase sequence after being provided with the characters and environment.
