In between his 45-minute commute to work, the University of University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> associate professor developed an example to explain the outcome to his mathematics students.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Voting is fundamental to democracy but sometimes people feel that voting isn&#8217;t fair,&rdquo; Yong said. &ldquo;If we can understand the mathematics behind voting, we can be more informed citizens. The math doesn\u2019t lie and doesn\u2019t have favorites.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Yong, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/11\/yong-multiplies-math-successes\/\">the first Native Hawaiian to earn a <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> in applied mathematics<\/a>, is also a recipient of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/05\/18\/bor-excellence-in-teaching-2020\/\">2020 Board of Regents\u2019 Medal for Excellence in Teaching<\/a>. There have been more reports of gerrymandering lately, with a case even going to the Supreme Court. There are also different methods of voting that are being used such as the 2020 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Democratic presidential primary using ranked voting.
