Currently, 30 nodes have been installed, and initial testing is taking place.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_128034\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-128034\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/system-mana-equipment-boost-2.jpg\" alt=\"man installing computer equipment\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-128034\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/system-mana-equipment-boost-2.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/system-mana-equipment-boost-2-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/system-mana-equipment-boost-2-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-128034\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New equipment for Mana is installed in the <abbr>ITS<\/abbr> Data Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The equipment was funded by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/10\/24\/uh-data-science-institute-nsf-grant\/\"> National Science Foundation\u2019s Major Research Instrumentation<\/a> (<abbr>NSF MRI<\/abbr>) award program, which provides support to acquire instrumentation necessary for advances in fundamental science and engineering research.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are thankful that this <abbr>NSF MRI<\/abbr> award has enabled us to add significant, state-of-the-art capacity to the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s Mana <abbr>HPC<\/abbr> cluster,&rdquo; said Vice President for Information Technology and <abbr title=\"Chief Information Officer\">CIO<\/abbr> <strong>Garret Yoshimi<\/strong>. &ldquo;The enhanced and expanded capacity will allow us to better serve our community of researchers, together with their global partners, as they take on the challenges of our modern world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The 1,200% increase of <abbr>GPUs<\/abbr> allows for a variety of applications, including machine learning, data science and molecular dynamics. The <abbr>CPU<\/abbr> core count has also increased by 29% from the existing 3,820 core community nodes which support high throughput computation. The new resources are networked with the latest generation of high dynamic range Infiniband and supports multi-node message passing interface applications.<\/p>\n<p>The second shipment of equipment will include Cray ClusterStor E1000, an all flash storage system running the Lustre parallel file system with 92 terabytes of raw capacity. This equipment will provide faster, high performance computing storage, suitable for the unique storage demands of artificial intelligence and machine learning. According to <abbr>HPE<\/abbr>, one Cray ClusterStor E1000 rack could download all movies on Netflix <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> in 20 seconds, and complete one input\/output operation for every person in Texas in 1 second.<\/p>\n<p>Mana\u2019s new <abbr>HPC<\/abbr> resources are anticipated to be available to the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> community as early as November 1.
