The funds will primarily be used for <abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> broadcast infrastructure, including a new antenna and transmitter. <abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> will also use some of the funds to renovate its live engineering room by installing new <abbr title=\"Audiovisual\">AV<\/abbr> equipment, lighting and counters. Next year\u2019s Radiothon will be in April 2021.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Original Story:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s student-run radio station is set to kick off its largest fundraiser of the year, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have made this year\u2019s event more important than ever.<\/p>\n<p>The annual Radiothon pledge drive encourages <a href=\"https:\/\/ktuh.org\/\"><abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> Honolulu<\/a> listeners and fans to submit donations to support the station. <abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> also plans special programming on air during the pledge drive. However, the station, which features student and community member volunteers, is expecting a loss of revenue and COVID-19 restrictions have limited other in-person fundraising opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Promotion has also been challenging since foot traffic on the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus has greatly reduced. <abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> has relied on online communication through social media channels.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The COVID-19 pandemic has definitely put a wrench into plans because we would normally have booths set up at Campus Center where we would promote Radiothon to students passing by. We would also post flyers across campus,&rdquo; said <strong>Desmond de Vera<\/strong>, <abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> marketing and development director.<\/p>\n<h2>Fundraising goals<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/manoa-ktuh-radiothon-2020-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person looking up records on a shelf\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-127967\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/manoa-ktuh-radiothon-2020-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/manoa-ktuh-radiothon-2020-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/manoa-ktuh-radiothon-2020.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Radiothon 2020 runs October 2&#8211;11, on 90.1<abbr title=\"frequency modulation\">FM<\/abbr> in Honolulu, 91.1<abbr title=\"frequency modulation\">FM<\/abbr> on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>\u2019s North Shore and streaming live on its website. Listeners may contribute tax-deductible donations by phone at (808) 956-5288, <a href=\"http:\/\/ktuh.org\/radiothon\">online on its website<\/a>, and via mail or in-person (with social distancing measures) at its office in <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Hemenway Hall.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> General Manager <strong>Bjarne Bartlett<\/strong> said donations will go toward essential broadcast and production equipment.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> is hoping to improve its essential broadcast infrastructure on 90.1 by purchasing a backup transmitter and on 91.1 by purchasing a new receive antenna and cable,&rdquo; Bartlett said. &ldquo;These upgrades will work in concert to provide better <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> coverage during periods when the main transmitter is being serviced. <abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> has a studio room that is in urgent need of renovation&#8212;we planned a $25,000 renovation for this space to create a state-of-the-art digital media studio if we reach $34,000.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>More on Radiothon 2020<\/h2>\n<p>This year\u2019s theme is &ldquo;Musical Echoes,&rdquo; which Bartlett said recognizes the station\u2019s 50th anniversary in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We wanted to have a theme that encouraged us to both reflect on 50 years of college radio at <abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> and explore new music,&rdquo; Bartlett said. &ldquo;Our theme also needed something that was not restrictive, because the <abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> <abbr>DJs<\/abbr> are endlessly creative in curating their musical selections and we didn\u2019t want to limit that in any way. Musical Echoes will follow each original song with a cover or remix (the &ldquo;echo&rdquo;) allowing for full creativity and unique\/interesting shows.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>KTUH<\/abbr> will also welcome back alumni <abbr>DJs<\/abbr> to host shows in an &ldquo;alumni takeover&rdquo; on air October 9&#8211;11.
