Some of the signs are also printed in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> native language. The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/kawaihuelani\/\">Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language<\/a> took on this initiative as a way to help protect the public and preserve the state\u2019s mother tongue.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is my hope that both Hawaiian and non-Hawaiian speakers learn the phrases and use them in their daily life as we continue to brave this storm together,&rdquo; said Kumu <strong>Keawe Lopes<\/strong>, director of Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language.<\/p>\n<p>One of those phrases is, Eia n&#257; <span aria-label=\"hoailona\">h&#333;&#699;ailona<\/span> o ka <span aria-label=\"mai\">ma&#699;i<\/span> ahulau COVID-19- &ldquo;Here are the symptoms for the COVID-19 virus.&rdquo; The <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian language) signs highlight health guidance and daily hygiene recommendations such as proper handwashing and mask wearing practices based on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In an effort to normalize Hawaiian language here in our homeland it is important that we seize every opportunity to promote her usage especially in professional academic locations,&rdquo; Lopes explained. &ldquo;These signs allow for the dissemination of our language specifically in regards to this particular context with COVID-19.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Lopes collaborated with <strong>Kuuipolani Kanahele Wong<\/strong>, a Hawaiian language professor and m&#257;naleo (native speaker) in finalizing the task given to Kawaihuelani Center for Hawaiian Language Educational Specialist <strong>Kainehe Chun-Lum<\/strong> and graduate student <strong>Maluhia States<\/strong>. The completed signage was first sent to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, including various departments part of <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui&#257;kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge. Shortly after, emails started to fill Lopes\u2019 inbox from outside the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> system requesting for signs too.
