David Ige commended Dean <strong>Brennon Morioka<\/strong>, Interim Associate Dean <strong>David Ma<\/strong> and the college at a virtual bill signing event.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/measure_indiv.aspx?billtype=HB&#038;billnumber=2590&#038;year=2020\">House Bill 2590<\/a> establishes an autonomous vehicle testing pilot program within the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Transportation (<abbr title=\"Hawaii Department of Transportation\">HDOT<\/abbr>). It allows the program to test autonomous vehicles on any public road in the state given that a human driver is present in the vehicle to intervene, prevent a collision or resolve any other issues during testing. The group is required to submit a report of its findings to the state legislature.<\/p>\n<p>Ige said his administration is interested in the advancement of autonomous vehicles and emphasized enhanced safety as a benefit of the technology.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Despite technological advancements, thousands of lives are lost every year in automobile accidents,&rdquo; Ige said. &ldquo;Approximately 93 percent of these accidents amount to human error. By removing human error, autonomous vehicle development would significantly reduce traffic accidents and allow for safer roadways.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Other benefits of autonomous vehicle technology include less traffic, reduced travel times, extending mobility options to people with disabilities, lower fuel consumption and decreased carbon dioxide emissions.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We\u2019re really excited to move forward on this technology.
