Encouraging future physicians to stay in our Islands not only strengthens the medical profession and quality of care, it helps improve the quality of life in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo;  &#8212;Virginia Weinman<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Inspired by the success of their $1 million donation in 2006 establishing the Barry and Virginia Weinman Fellowship to fund 10 medical students\u2019 educations, renowned philanthropists Barry and Virginia Weinman recently donated $1.56 million. This new gift will fund 10 full-tuition scholarships at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>). The Weinmans, in partnership with The Queen&#8217;s Health Systems and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Pacific Health, are also currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/news\/community-partners-donate-over-3million\">supporting 23 students on full scholarship<\/a> at <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2018\/07\/19\/full-tuition-jabsom-scholarships\/\">Community partners donate $3.66 million for 23 &ldquo;full-tuition&rdquo; <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> scholarships<\/a> [VIDEO], July 19, 2018<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;We are honored to be able to assist in helping local students become medical doctors, which will help strengthen the medical profession in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said Virginia Weinman. &ldquo;There is an ongoing shortage of doctors in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and our contribution is a tool to help address this issue by recruiting and retaining future physicians.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Weinman added, &ldquo;With rising tuition and other costs, medical students can be facing a huge burden of debt upon graduation. They then encounter skyrocketing malpractice insurance premiums in many needed specialties. This encourages them to leave <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> or practice in fields based on economic realities, rather than the community\u2019s needs.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> Dean <strong>Jerris Hedges<\/strong>, Barry and Virginia Weinman Endowed Chair, said, &ldquo;The path to becoming a physician is arduous. The personal investment of time and resources is significant. Providing aspiring public school students from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> with financial support through these Weinman Scholarships represents a major commitment to easing the path to and through medical school.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Since 2001, Barry and Virginia Weinman have personally invested more than $6.5 million to support the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. This includes support for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½Cancer Center<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/shielder.hawaii.edu\">Shidler College of Business<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiiathletics.com\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Athletics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are so grateful to the Weinmans for their deep commitment to the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Vice President of Advancement and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation<\/a> <abbr title=\"chief executive officer\">CEO<\/abbr> <strong>Tim Dolan<\/strong>. &ldquo;The Weinmans are incredibly generous, strategic philanthropic leaders who understand that <abbr>UH<\/abbr> is an economic driver integral to a healthy <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.
