Pukahi<\/strong>. She is a 25-year veteran of the university&#8217;s security office, where for the last eight years Pukahi served as a sergeant and investigated cases of the most sensitive and complex nature, including sexual assaults.<\/p>\n<p>Capt. Pukahi&#8217;s immediate focus is on training, operations and rebuilding a team dedicated to service. She oversees a security staff of approximately 40, about 25 percent of them women.<\/p>\n<p>Pukahi came to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa in 1987 as a security professional from the private sector and, inspired by the first <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa commencement ceremony she witnessed, made the commitment to pursue a college degree. &ldquo;While at Kahuku High School, I was not the most serious student, but the tuition waivers available to university employees gave me the opportunity to go back to school,&rdquo; says Pukahi.<\/p>\n<p>She earned an associate degree in administration of justice from <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a> in 2000, and a bachelor&#8217;s in public administration from <a href=\"http:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Pukahi was also recognized as one of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2011\/10\/28\/top-cop\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s Top Cops in 2011<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Read the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/article.php?aId=5481\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa news release<\/a> to learn more about Pukahi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alberta J.K.
