Tagawa said. &ldquo;It\u2019s been an exciting life, for sure.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126541\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126541\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/hawaii-forest-team-tagawa.jpg\" alt=\"Anya Tagawa\" width=\"200\" class=\"size-full wp-image-126541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/hawaii-forest-team-tagawa.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/hawaii-forest-team-tagawa-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/hawaii-forest-team-tagawa-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126541\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Forest <abbr>TEAM<\/abbr> alumna Anya Tagawa built a foundation for her successful career.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tagawa\u2019s higher education journey, which prepared her for a successful career in conservation and education, began in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.hawaii.edu\/forestteam\">Tropical Forest Ecosystem and Agroforestry Management program<\/a>, or Forest <abbr>TEAM<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>Forest <abbr>TEAM<\/abbr> students learn to manage <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s native forest ecosystems, grow native plants, establish agroforestry operations, and use Global Positioning Systems and Geographic Information Systems.<\/p>\n<p>The Forest <abbr>TEAM<\/abbr> program is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and Tagawa\u2019s education and career highlight the reason <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> established the associate degree program.<\/p>\n<h2>Opportunities for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents<\/h2>\n<p>Founded by the late <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> professor <strong>Fred Stone<\/strong>, the Forest <abbr>TEAM<\/abbr> program was created so <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents like Tagawa could get the education they need to compete for jobs in the conservation and forestry industries, rather than having all the hires come from outside <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was so <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> kids could get these jobs with the forest service and the national park and other organizations, so we could equalize the playing field and local kids could have access to these jobs,&rdquo; said <strong>Orlo Steele<\/strong>, one of two professors who lead the program.<\/p>\n<p>In the two decades since, many graduates have found careers with government organizations, non-profits, and businesses or started businesses of their own.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126540\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126540\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/hawaii-forest-team-steele-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"steele with students\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-126540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/hawaii-forest-team-steele-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/hawaii-forest-team-steele-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/hawaii-forest-team-steele.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126540\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Orlo Steele, center, with students.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Steele said about half of graduates go directly into the workforce after earning their associate of science degrees from the Forest <abbr>TEAM<\/abbr> program and half continue onto bachelor\u2019s and graduate programs.<\/p>\n<p>Forest Solutions, <abbr title=\"Incorporated\">Inc.<\/abbr> is a forestry management business that manages 150,000 acres on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island and has hired several Forest <abbr>TEAM<\/abbr> graduates over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Nicholas Koch, Forest Solutions general manager and president of the Hawaii Forest Industry Association, said that a trained workforce is vital for any industry, and, for Forest Solutions, graduates who have training plus knowledge of the local environment are an asset.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They\u2019ve walked on lava before. They\u2019re familiar with it and they don\u2019t mind,&rdquo; Koch said. &ldquo;They\u2019re not surprised by the conditions of the land that we have here. They know what guinea grass is all about.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Growing up outdoors<\/h2>\n<p>Tagawa was one of those &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> kids,&rdquo; the program was designed to benefit, and her upbringing in Kurtistown provided the inspiration to pursue the education and career path she did.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_126542\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126542\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/hawaii-forest-team-3.jpg\" alt=\"students looking at plants\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" class=\"size-full wp-image-126542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/hawaii-forest-team-3.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/hawaii-forest-team-3-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126542\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students in the Forest <abbr>TEAM<\/abbr> program on an excursion during the spring 2020 semester.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Both of my parents were avid hunters, so I spent a lot of time in our native forests, and part of why I chose to enroll in the Forest <abbr>TEAM<\/abbr> program and other programs that led me to conservation, was because of these early outdoor experiences, experiences that eventually led me to what I\u2019m doing today,&rdquo; said Tagawa. &ldquo;We did a lot of exploring as kids, me and my siblings, and two of us became conservationists, so I think our outdoor lifestyle as children was impactful.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>When Tagawa enrolled at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> after high school, she found a program that was a perfect fit for her. It was more affordable than a four-year university, she found &ldquo;amazing&rdquo; supportive faculty, built lifelong friendships, developed connections in the industry, it was close to home and her family, it bolstered her work ethic, and the hands-on experiences in the program gave her an edge when looking for jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The program provided opportunities for leadership that sparked a love of teaching and education.
