{"id":126333,"date":"2020-09-01T15:15:24","date_gmt":"2020-09-02T01:15:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=126333"},"modified":"2020-09-01T15:15:24","modified_gmt":"2020-09-02T01:15:24","slug":"uh-esports-overwatch-tournament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/09\/01\/uh-esports-overwatch-tournament\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Esports tournament performance impresses colleges nationwide"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_126332\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-126332\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/manoa-uh-esports-overwatch.gif\" alt=\"overwatch gameplay gif\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-126332\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-126332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gameplay of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Esports\u2019 <em>Overwatch<\/em> team during the <abbr>UCLA<\/abbr> Summer Invitational.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a>\u2019s Esports team is gaining national recognition for its performance at the <abbr title=\"University of California, Los Angeles\">UCLA<\/abbr> Summer Invitational <em>Overwatch<\/em> tournament on August 22&#8211;23. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uscannenbergmedia.com\/2020\/08\/27\/uclas-summer-invitational-sets-the-stage-for-fall-overwatch-season\/\">In a recap by USC\u2019s Annenberg Media<\/a>, colleges across the country were impressed with <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Esports.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;[University of California Irvine] <abbr>UCI<\/abbr> (the first seeded team in the tournament) was great as always,&rdquo; said <abbr>UCLA<\/abbr> Esports director Cathy Ge and Dillon LeDuc, &ldquo;but the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> was one of the new schools entering the competitive scene who took some unexpected wins in the <em>Overwatch<\/em> tournament last weekend.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <abbr>UH<\/abbr> News story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/20\/uh-esports-ucla-summer-invitational\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Esports play through the pandemic with national tournament<\/a>, August 20, 2020<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <em>Overwatch<\/em> team from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Esports consisted of juniors <strong>Alan Muneoka<\/strong> and <strong>Alexine Niro<\/strong>; sophomores <strong>Clark Acohido<\/strong>, <strong>Jonathan Valencia<\/strong> and <strong>Johnny Ho<\/strong>; and freshmen <strong>Bryan McAniff<\/strong>, <strong>Ethan Nguyen<\/strong>, <strong>Reuben Sablad<\/strong> and <strong>Justin Chow<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>During the tournament, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Esports lost to <abbr>UCI<\/abbr>, then defeated <abbr title=\"University of California\">UC<\/abbr> San Diego and Colorado State University before losing to Ohio Northern.
