Richardson School of Law<\/a> welcomed an incoming class of 116 to the fall semester with a four-day Zoom orientation August 15, 17&#8211;19 that included encouragement and advice about the challenges ahead, as well as a virtual moment during which <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald administered the student pledge from his Supreme Court chambers.<\/p>\n<p>Recktenwald took the opportunity to inspire the students to commit themselves to caring for their community, especially in ways that increase access to justice.<\/p>\n<p>He praised the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> law school for what it does &ldquo;to make our community a more safe and just place,&rdquo; citing the clinics that bring students into a wide range of service projects, and the 60 hours of pro bono work each student completes before graduation, which was originally a student-led initiative.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_125774\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125774\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/manoa-law-chief-justice-1.jpg\" alt=\"man smiling\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-125774\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/manoa-law-chief-justice-1.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/manoa-law-chief-justice-1-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/manoa-law-chief-justice-1-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-125774\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Recktenwald also welcomed Dean <strong>Camille Nelson<\/strong>, calling her &ldquo;a remarkable person \u2026 And absolutely the right person to lead the law school at this challenging time,&rdquo; while also acknowledging former Dean <strong>Aviam Soifer<\/strong>\u2019s long and successful tenure.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/16\/new-law-school-dean\/\">New dean for Âé¶¹´«Ã½William S. Richardson School of Law<\/a>, April 16, 2020<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Dean Nelson reiterated to the students the importance of working in service of justice, and in service to others.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Clearly, how you move through this world matters, and Richardson lawyers are known for their excellence and professionalism,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The incoming students include: 86 full-time juris doctor students; 19 part-time juris doctor students; 7 students in the master&#8217;s degree program; 3 in the advanced juris doctor program; and 1 in the doctoral program.
