Our sincere mahalo goes out to <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Sen. Mazie Hirono, <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Sen. We are fortunate to have someone who brings a wealth of knowledge and an impressive background with the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Navy and <abbr>NROTC<\/abbr> operations to lead the new unit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to thank the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> for their enduring commitment and professional expertise that has helped the Navy to help us solve some technical challenges. The education and training of Naval officers further strengthens those bonds,\u201d said <abbr title=\"admiral\">Adm.<\/abbr> John C. Aquilino, Commander, <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Pacific Fleet. \u201cI am confident both the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> and the Navy will benefit from this steadfast relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Midshipmen complete undergraduate degrees, while simultaneously receiving military training. Many receive traditional four-year scholarships from the Navy, although two and three-year scholarships, and non-scholarship programs are available. Upon successful completion of the program, midshipmen are commissioned as Navy ensigns or Marine Corps second lieutenants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis new <abbr>ROTC<\/abbr> program will give more <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>i students a chance at earning scholarships and gaining an education, while helping the Navy strengthen its diversity to make sure its officers and Marines better reflect the American public and our values in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>,\u201d Schatz said. \u201cI thank my colleagues on the Senate Appropriations Committee for coming together to secure the funding that made this historic program possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/12\/31\/manoa-navy-rotc-funding\/\">$1.1M secured for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s first-ever Naval <abbr>ROTC<\/abbr> program, December 31, 2019<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWhile the coronavirus prevents us from being together in person, I join our community in celebrating the signing of the <abbr title=\"memorandum of understanding\">MOU<\/abbr> and the hiring of a commanding officer for the Naval <abbr>ROTC<\/abbr> program at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, officially opening the program that will provide quality educational opportunities for students also looking to serve their country,\u201d Hirono said. \u201cI thank the Navy for its engagement during the years-long process to establish this program, and I look forward to our continual strengthening of the Navy\u2019s commitment to the Indo-Pacific region and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Captain Nisbett, a naval aviator, will serve as the unit\u2019s first commanding officer. He previously commanded the Oregon State University <abbr>NROTC<\/abbr> unit and served as the deputy commander for <abbr>NROTC<\/abbr> Operations at Naval Service Training Command (<abbr>NSTC<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am extraordinarily proud to be the first commanding officer and plank owner of the new <abbr>NROTC<\/abbr> unit in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>,\u201d said Nisbett. \u201cThis state has long historical ties to the Navy and is a central hub of naval activity today. I look forward to working with <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and the other <abbr>ROTC<\/abbr> programs in developing our future Navy and Marine Corps leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>NROTC<\/abbr> program develops young men and women morally, mentally and physically and instills in them the highest ideals of honor, courage and commitment.
