This year marks the centennial anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. To celebrate the monumental passage, USA<\/abbr> Today<\/em> recognized 10 women from every state and U.S.<\/abbr> territory as Women of the Century<\/a> that has motivated and inspired others. Each selectee had to be alive during the last 100 years—1920 to 2020.<\/p>\n

A majority of wahine (women) on Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s list are notable University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> faculty or alumni.<\/p>\n

Isabella Abbott<\/h2>\n

Renowned UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Ethnobotanist Isabella Kauakea Yau Yung Aiona Abbott<\/strong> was the first Native Hawaiian woman to receive a PhD<\/abbr> in science. Known as the “First Lady of Limu,” Abbott discovered more than 200 species of algae and is regarded as the world\u2019s leading expert on algae in the Pacific Ocean basin.<\/p>\n
