Andrew Stenger and Wei-Kung Wang<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Two researchers at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) have each been awarded a prestigious <abbr title=\"research project grant\">R01<\/abbr> grant from the National Institutes of Health (<abbr>NIH<\/abbr>). <abbr>R01<\/abbr> grants are among the most rigorously reviewed and most competitive, each bringing in at least $1 million in federal direct dollars, and another half million in indirect funding to <abbr title=\"university of hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. <\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> researchers are <strong>V. Andrew Stenger<\/strong>, associate director in the Department of Medicine, and <strong>Wei-Kung Wang<\/strong>, professor of tropical medicine and medical microbiology.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Each new <abbr>R01<\/abbr> is a reason for celebration at our university. Only the best of the best in the country get them. These faculty have competed against faculty at Johns Hopkins, Stanford, Harvard and other prestigious institutions,&rdquo; <strong>Rachel Boulay<\/strong>, <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> associate director for research said. &ldquo;These projects were judged to be in the top percentile of all applications. These <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> faculty have undeniably strong research programs and give <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and our university a reason to be very proud.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> currently has 15 active <abbr>R01<\/abbr> grants from <abbr>NIH<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<h2>V. Andrew Stenger<\/h2>\n<p>Stenger received an <abbr>R01<\/abbr> for his research on magnetic resonance imaging (<abbr>MRI<\/abbr>). His research focuses on developing new methodology for <abbr>MRI<\/abbr>.
