University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa<\/a> Professor of Chemistry Ralf I. Kaiser<\/strong> and University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> College of Pharmacy Dean John Pezzuto<\/strong> have both been named Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science<\/a> for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.<\/p>\n

Ralf Kaiser<\/h2>\n

Ralf I. Kaiser<\/strong> was elected as an AAAS<\/abbr> Fellow for distinguished contributions in the field of reaction dynamics, particularly for understanding formation mechanisms of complex molecules in extraterrestrial environments and in combustion systems.<\/p>\n

Kaiser received his diploma from the University of M\u00fcnster, Germany in 1991 and his PhD<\/abbr> in 1994 in chemistry from the same institute. After three years at the University of California at Berkeley as a postdoctoral fellow, he conducted his habilitation in physics before joining the faculty of the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa in 2002.<\/p>\n

John Pezzuto<\/h2>\n

John Pezzuto<\/strong> was honored “for distinguished service in the advancement of pharmacy and pharmaceutical education, and pioneering work in the field of natural product inhibitors of cancer.” He is widely recognized for discovering the anti-cancer benefits of reserveratrol in grapes and grape products.<\/p>\n

Pezzuto became the founding dean for UH<\/abbr> Hilo’s College of Pharmacy in 2006. He has held several administrative positions in academia, including dean of the College of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. He also was associate dean for Research and Graduate Education, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC<\/abbr>) College of Pharmacy, deputy director of the UIC<\/abbr> Cancer Center and head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacognosy at UIC<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n
