Thompson School of Social Work<\/a>, and lead modeler and forecaster for <abbr>HIEMA<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>Lee described the three types of transmission of <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> and how to best reduce the spread of the virus. The types of transmission are droplets, aerosolized and fomite, which means surface.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We know that <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> prefers metallic surfaces that are smooth, so anything that\u2019s cloth or has texture to it, it\u2019s less likely to survive,&rdquo; said Lee. &ldquo;So droplets and aerosolized are related in that when you cough or sneeze the first six feet projects out, but because it\u2019s within some sort of liquid substance it\u2019s going to fall down because it\u2019s heavier.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_119343\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-119343\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-public-health-thomas-lee-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"man at a computer\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-119343\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-public-health-thomas-lee-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-public-health-thomas-lee-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/manoa-public-health-thomas-lee.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-119343\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thomas Lee<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In cold and dry climates, like Las Vegas, those droplets will linger in the air longer in comparison to a humid climate like <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Â鶹´«Ã½,<\/span> because water in the air will weigh the droplets down causing them to fall to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>However, transmission through droplets and aerosolization can occur with older air-conditioning units that do not bring in fresh air and are continually recycling potentially contaminated air. Lee explains that spending time outdoors while social distancing is safer than staying indoors with an air-conditioning unit that recycles air.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr> is an envelope virus, which means that it is pretty easy to kill. Even just regular soap and water is such an effective tool,&rdquo; added Lee. &ldquo;We can all do our part to reduce the risk of transmission for <abbr>COVID-19<\/abbr>.
