A University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> spring 2020 Hawaiian language graduate was one of four honors students nationwide recognized as 2020 Portz Scholars<\/a>. Selected by the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC<\/abbr>), Molly Keʻalohi<\/span> Miyamoto<\/strong> is the fourth recipient from UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in the last five years.<\/p>\n

Miyamoto will present her UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Honors Program<\/a> thesis, “No Ke K\u0101laiwaiwai: The Elements of 19th Century Hawaiian Economics,” at the 2020 NCHC<\/abbr> conference this fall. Miyamoto\u2019s thesis examines the unique nature of the ancient Hawaiian subsistence economy and the early economic development in the post-contact Hawaiian Kingdom under the rule of Kamehameha I<\/abbr> until the Great M\u0101hele.<\/p>\n

It focuses on a little-known period of the history of the Hawaiian Kingdom and makes extensive use of primary sources in ʻ\u014dlelo<\/span> Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian) and English. Her thesis was originally written in Hawaiian then translated into English.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m honored to receive this distinction and represent ʻ\u014dlelo<\/span> Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and Native Hawaiian research,” Miyamoto said. “I\u2019m extremely grateful for the guidance and support throughout this project from my mentor, Lalepa Koga<\/strong>; my committee member, Kahikina de Silva<\/strong>; Honors Program Director Vernadette Gonzalez<\/strong>; and the entire Honors Program.”<\/p>\n

Miyamoto added, “I couldn\u2019t have done it without the assistance of Keoni Lee, CEO<\/abbr> of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Investment Ready; ʻIlima<\/span> Long<\/strong>, Eia M\u0101noa faculty specialist; and Native Hawaiian Student Services<\/a>, who helped me take the first steps in this project and have continued to support me and my work.”<\/p>\n

About Miyamoto<\/h2>\n

Miyamoto graduated in spring 2020 with a BA<\/abbr> in Hawaiian with honors and a BBA<\/abbr> in management. She works as a community curator and bookkeeper at Waiwai Collective<\/a>, a co-creative resiliency hub for culture, community and commerce. Miyamoto plans on returning in the future to pursue an MBA<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n

Originally from the Seattle area, she now calls Kahaluʻu<\/span> home on the windward side of Oʻahu<\/span>. She is the daughter of UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa engineering alumni and a proud descendant of the Punihaole ʻohana<\/span> from North Kona, Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
