Selected by the National Collegiate Honors Council (<abbr>NCHC<\/abbr>), <strong>Molly <span aria-label=\"Kealohi\">Ke&#699;alohi<\/span> Miyamoto<\/strong> is the fourth recipient from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in the last five years.<\/p>\n<p>Miyamoto will present her <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/honors\/\">Honors Program<\/a> thesis, &ldquo;No Ke K\u0101laiwaiwai: The Elements of 19th Century Hawaiian Economics,&rdquo; at the 2020 <abbr>NCHC<\/abbr> conference this fall. Miyamoto\u2019s thesis examines the unique nature of the ancient Hawaiian subsistence economy and the early economic development in the post-contact Hawaiian Kingdom under the rule of Kamehameha <abbr title=\"Roman numeral one\">I<\/abbr> until the Great M\u0101hele.<\/p>\n<p>It focuses on a little-known period of the history of the Hawaiian Kingdom and makes extensive use of primary sources in <span aria-label=\"\u014dlelo\">&#699;\u014dlelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> (Hawaiian) and English. Her thesis was originally written in Hawaiian then translated into English.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019m honored to receive this distinction and represent <span aria-label=\"\u014dlelo\">&#699;\u014dlelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and Native Hawaiian research,&rdquo; Miyamoto said. &ldquo;I\u2019m extremely grateful for the guidance and support throughout this project from my mentor, <strong>Lalepa Koga<\/strong>; my committee member, <strong>Kahikina de Silva<\/strong>; Honors Program Director <strong>Vernadette Gonzalez<\/strong>; and the entire Honors Program.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Miyamoto added, &ldquo;I couldn\u2019t have done it without the assistance of Keoni Lee, <abbr title=\"chief executive officer\">CEO<\/abbr> of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Investment Ready; <strong><span aria-label=\"Ilima\">&#699;Ilima<\/span> Long<\/strong>, Eia M\u0101noa faculty specialist; and <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/nhss\/\">Native Hawaiian Student Services<\/a>, who helped me take the first steps in this project and have continued to support me and my work.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>About Miyamoto<\/h2>\n<p>Miyamoto graduated in spring 2020 with a <abbr title=\"bachelor of arts\">BA<\/abbr> in Hawaiian with honors and a <abbr title=\"bachelor of business administration\">BBA<\/abbr> in management. She works as a community curator and bookkeeper at <a href=\"http:\/\/waiwaicollective.com\/\">Waiwai Collective<\/a>, a co-creative resiliency hub for culture, community and commerce. Miyamoto plans on returning in the future to pursue an <abbr title=\"master of business administration\">MBA<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from the Seattle area, she now calls <span aria-label=\"Kahaluu\">Kahalu&#699;u<\/span> home on the windward side of <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.
