  {"id":124543,"date":"2020-08-07T16:06:38","date_gmt":"2020-08-08T02:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=124543"},"modified":"2021-08-31T15:45:44","modified_gmt":"2021-09-01T01:45:44","slug":"virtual-symposium-record-participants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/08\/07\/virtual-symposium-record-participants\/","title":{"rendered":"Virtual symposium draws record number of participants"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_124559\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-124559\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/manoa-urop-sure-symposium.jpg\" alt=\"15 people on a zoom meeting call\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-124559\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/manoa-urop-sure-symposium.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/manoa-urop-sure-symposium-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/manoa-urop-sure-symposium-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-124559\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students presented projects related to the Symphony of the Hawaiian Birds.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nearly 100 University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa undergraduate students who conducted faculty-mentored research and creative work in various disciplines showcased their projects at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/urop\/summer-undergraduate-research-experience-sure\/sure-symposium-3\/\">2020 Summer Undergraduate Research Experience Symposium<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Normally an annual in-person event hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/urop\/\">Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program<\/a> (<abbr>UROP<\/abbr>), this year\u2019s first-ever virtual format still gave students an opportunity to present their work and receive feedback from peers, experts and community members.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We believe that providing a relaxed, yet professional atmosphere allowed the presenters to gain confidence in presenting their work and broaden their perspectives by interacting with other researchers and creatives,&rdquo; <abbr>UROP<\/abbr> Coordinator <strong>Seung Yang<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n<p>The virtual symposium, held on July 31, drew more than 180 guests and 15 staff and volunteers. <abbr>UROP<\/abbr> Coordinator <strong>Jessie Chen<\/strong> said one unanticipated surprise was that the number of student presenters quickly surpassed numbers for the past two years, including a request from outside of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The virtual format allowed us to expand the capacity of the event to serve <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students off campus and to increase access to one of the few, if not the only, discipline-wide undergraduate research and creative work symposia during summer 2020 in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; Chen said.<\/p>\n<h2>Faculty mentored projects<\/h2>\n<p>Students presented on topics including developing a mobile application to engage <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> students in computer science education, sharing music education through Symphony of the Hawaiian Birds and examining the effect of <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">ahupua&#699;a<\/span> restoration efforts in Loko <span aria-label=\"Ia\">I&#699;a<\/span> o <span aria-label=\"Heeia\">He&#699;eia<\/span>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em>Âé¶¹´«Ã½News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/05\/26\/research-creative-work-amid-covid19\/\">Students, faculty mentors adapt undergraduate research and creative work<\/a>, May 26, 2020<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Three presentations were on projects related to COVID-19. <strong>Alan Tong<\/strong> and <strong>Elizabeth Swantek<\/strong> are working with <a href=\"https:\/\/math.hawaii.edu\/wordpress\/\">Department of Mathematics<\/a> Professor <strong>Monique Chyba<\/strong> to develop a model to predict COVID-19 in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. Loos conducted an anonymous survey of 110 students to analyze factors comparing online and face-to-face instruction.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I chose the topic of COVID-19 because of the strong impact it has brought upon both students and professors,&rdquo; Loos said. &ldquo;The coronavirus caused great changes in the way that school and work are being conducted as many are now teleworking and transitioning to an online style of learning.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Loos, who is a computer science tutor, has seen a sharp uptick in students seeking assistance during COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There was a significant increase in the number of students who attended tutoring online rather than in-person,&rdquo; Loos said. &ldquo;Students found it more desirable to seek help from the comfort of their room, and it was very easy to just log in and ask questions. At peak times, I was simultaneously helping nine students at once.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Crosby added, &ldquo;Tina enjoyed helping students in both learning environments and her <abbr>ICS<\/abbr> mentees were able to understand and complete their assignments. Both the in-person and online tutoring provided students with opportunities to interact with others.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Support from <abbr>UROP<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<p><abbr>UROP<\/abbr> provides more than $450,000 annually to support faculty-mentored undergraduate student projects and presentations.
