Written in collaboration with scientists from five other institutions across the nation, it was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/cancerdiscovery.aacrjournals.org\/content\/early\/2020\/07\/19\/2159-8290.CD-19-1220\"><em>Cancer Discovery<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>BAP1<\/abbr> Cancer Syndrome, caused by inherited mutations of the <abbr>BAP1<\/abbr> gene, was discovered by Carbone and his team at the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center in 2011. Since then, many affected individuals have been identified in the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr>, Europe, Australia, Japan and the Middle East.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Related <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2019\/12\/17\/cancer-related-gene-nih-grant\/\">Cancer-related research leads to $2.6<abbr title=\"million\">M<\/abbr> grant<\/a>, December 17, 2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This medical condition is characterized by the development of one and often multiple cancers in those who inherit mutations of the <abbr>BAP1<\/abbr> gene. The most common cancers being mesothelioma, uveal and cutaneous melanoma, and clear-cell renal cell carcinoma. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_80067\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-80067\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/uh-cancer-center-carbone-m-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-80067\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/uh-cancer-center-carbone-m-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/uh-cancer-center-carbone-m.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-80067\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michele Carbone<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Identifying those who carry <abbr>BAP1<\/abbr> gene mutations allows the establishment of cancer prevention and early detection measures to save their lives,&rdquo; said Carbone.<\/p>\n<p>The National Cancer Institute is conducting a clinical trial in collaboration with Carbone\u2019s team, in which carriers of <abbr>BAP1<\/abbr> mutations are given annual medical, radiological and serological tests for early detection at no cost.
