Development of the program was facilitated by <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo <a href=\"http:\/\/kipuka.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">K\u012bpuka Native Hawaiian Student Center<\/a>, with collaboration among the <a href=\"https:\/\/pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/sociology\/programs.php\">Department of Sociology<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/kinesiology\/\">Department of Kinesiology and Exercise Sciences<\/a> (<abbr>KES<\/abbr>), where it will be housed. It is an interdisciplinary certificate that includes courses provided by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olelo.hawaii.edu\/\">Ka Haka <span aria-label=\"Ula\">&#699;Ula<\/span> O <span aria-label=\"Keelikolani\">Ke&#699;elik&#333;lani<\/span> College of Hawaiian Language<\/a> and the departments of <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/~psych\/\">psychology<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/anthropology\/\">anthropology<\/a>, sociology, and <abbr>KES<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Indigenous public health certificate will provide students with an understanding of the purpose and practice of public health, Indigenous communities\u2019 practices of health and well-being, and\/or conventional and traditional health perspectives,&rdquo; explained <strong>Misty Pacheco<\/strong>, <abbr>KES<\/abbr> chair and associate professor. &ldquo;Students will become familiar with public health principles and gain an appreciation of Indigenous health concerns, including Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, as well as other groups.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Students in the program will also learn about the purpose and practice of public health, compare conventional and traditional health perspectives, and understand indigenous health concerns and disparities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_123076\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-123076\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hilo-misty-pacheco-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Misty Pacheco\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-123076\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hilo-misty-pacheco-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hilo-misty-pacheco-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/hilo-misty-pacheco.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-123076\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Misty Pacheco<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;We have also seen the disproportionate effect COVID-19 has had on indigenous populations around the world, and are once again reminded that we must consider the specific needs and priorities of indigenous communities,&rdquo; Pacheco said. &ldquo;One thing that is glaringly clear, and which practically everyone can universally agree upon, is the importance of public health.
