Burns School of Medicine <\/a>(<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) welcomed the first seven students of the Class of 2024&#8212;the 2020 graduates of the <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/offices-programs\/imi\/\"><span aria-label=\"Imi\">&#699;Imi<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hoola\">Ho&#699;&#333;la<\/span> Post-Baccalaureate Program<\/a>. The graduates celebrated their completion of the program in early June.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Imi\">&#699;Imi<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hoola\">Ho&#699;&#333;la<\/span> (Hawaiian for &ldquo;those who seek to heal&rdquo;) is a 12-month post-baccalaureate program in <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>\u2019s Department of Native Hawaiian Health designed to provide educational opportunities to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who wish to pursue a career in medicine and are deemed capable of succeeding in medical school.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Melia Takakusagi<\/strong> from <span aria-label=\"Eleele\">&#699;Ele&#699;ele<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> grew up with family members who suffered from cancer, diabetes and heart issues. She desired to become a doctor in high school to improve the lives of others. &ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Imi\">&#699;Imi<\/span> is challenging academically and has made me grow so much as an individual, and as classmates, we are exposed to each other\u2019s experiences. I would recommend it to others,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>The graduates<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sarah Albrecht<\/strong>, a graduate of Konawaena High School, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, earned a <abbr title=\"bachelor of science\">BS<\/abbr> in bioengineering at University of Washington.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Joshua Ilustre<\/strong>, a graduate of George Washington High School in Chalan Pago, Guam, earned a <abbr>BS<\/abbr> in biology at the University of Portland.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Collin Liang<\/strong>, a graduate from Roosevelt High School, <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, earned a <abbr>BS<\/abbr> in molecular cell biology from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Piueti Maka<\/strong>, a graduate from Punahou School on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, earned a <abbr title=\"bachelor of arts\">BA<\/abbr> in biology from Pepperdine University.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Peggy Su<\/strong>, a graduate from Moanalua High School, <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, earned a <abbr>BS<\/abbr> in microbiology and a masters in public health, from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Melia Takakusagi<\/strong>, a graduate from Waimea High School on <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, earned a <abbr>BS<\/abbr> in cell and molecular biology from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jennifer Wong<\/strong>, a graduate from Kapolei High School, <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, earned a <abbr>BS<\/abbr> in biology from the University of Washington. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The rest of their 2024 <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> classmates will join them in July and will likely look to them for insight as they delve into four years of long nights of studying, exams and bonding with each other as they pursue their dreams to become medical doctors. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/imi-ho\u02bbola-class-of-2020-grads-are-jabsoms-first-2024-students\/\">Read more about the 2020 <span aria-label=\"Imi\">&#699;Imi<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hoola\">Ho&#699;&#333;la<\/span> graduates<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The 2020 graduates of the John A.
