The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute for Marine Biology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmrphawaii.org\/\">Marine Mammal Research Program<\/a> student was part of a team that sailed from Chile to Antarctica to measure and observe humpback and fin whales. Vivier collaborated and operated drones as part of a large-scale research project led by <a href=\"https:\/\/btbel.pbsci.ucsc.edu\/people\/principal-investigator\/\">Ari Friedlaender<\/a>, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/btbel.pbsci.ucsc.edu\/\">Friedlaender lab<\/a> is based at University of California, Santa Cruz.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/manoa-mmrp-antarctica-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-121824\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/manoa-mmrp-antarctica-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/manoa-mmrp-antarctica-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/manoa-mmrp-antarctica-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During eight days in Antarctica, the team measured and observed 16 humpback whales and two fin whales. They also collected audio data and tissue samples from killer, minke, humpback and fin whales. At the end of the Antarctic expedition, the team also spent three days in the Falkland Islands, where Vivier photographed other incredible wildlife including penguins, seals and dolphins.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmrphawaii.org\/post\/the-place-to-be-as-worldwide-pandemic-rises-a-whale-research-expedition-in-antarctica\">Vivier posted a blog about the expedition<\/a>, which includes a video and photos, and wrote, &ldquo;I was fortunate to visit 12 magnificent Antarctic locations. The sunrises and sunsets were mind-blowing.
