The inaugural cohort of the Introduction to Medicare started with 11 students from the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/publichealth\/\">Office of Public Health Studies<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sswork\/\">Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This new course was the first partnership between the Executive Office on Aging (<abbr>EOA<\/abbr>), <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr title=\"SHIP\">State Health Insurance Assistance Program<\/abbr> (State Health Insurance Assistance Program) and <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s Office of Public Health Studies and School of Social Work.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This was the first joint course between Public Health and Social Work, the first course sponsored by the <abbr title=\"Department of Health\">DOH<\/abbr> Executive Office of Aging, and the first course using a national Medicare curriculum,&rdquo; said <strong>Victoria Fan<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa associate professor of health policy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_120753\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120753\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/manoa-public-health-medicare-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people on Zoom\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-120753\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/manoa-public-health-medicare-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/manoa-public-health-medicare-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/manoa-public-health-medicare.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-120753\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Introduction to Medicare transition to a Zoom classroom.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The innovative curriculum used a variety of modalities to familiarize students with Medicare. Training included online learning modules from the national <abbr>SHIP<\/abbr> network, guest speakers from <abbr>EOA<\/abbr> and case study reviews with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>SHIP<\/abbr> staff and volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was rewarding to learn alongside both the students and teaching team throughout this innovative course offering, which pairs extensive Medicare knowledge with tangible real world application,&rdquo; said <strong>Whitney Kim<\/strong>, a <abbr title=\"masters of social work\">MSW<\/abbr> student and Pacific Health Analytics Collaborative graduate assistant.<\/p>\n<h2>Service learning projects<\/h2>\n<p>Students were split into four groups to develop service learning projects. Two groups explored health insurance options for the Marshallese community and veterans and their spouses. Another group focused on dual-eligible populations that qualify for Medicare and Medicaid. The last group translated basic Medicare information into Korean and Tagalog for people with limited English.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;From day one we had an amazing teaching team and the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Executive Office on Aging that were welcoming and helpful,&rdquo; said <strong>Justin Mortensen<\/strong>, an undergraduate public health student. &ldquo;They made learning a complicated insurance system easy to learn in small parts through activities and modules. It was a great experience being able to build relationships with community partners and work with my group to create a product that could benefit Medicare beneficiaries.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Collectively, the students research produced powerpoint presentations, brochures and infographics that will help their focus communities and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>SHIP<\/abbr>. The <abbr title=\"coronavirus\">COVID-19<\/abbr> stay-at-home order prompted the teaching team to restructure the course for the remainder of the semester.
