The seven-credit, three-class online program starts on July 6, and students can finish by this December.<\/p>\n<p>Windward\u2019s <abbr>CNA<\/abbr> program is unique, as it combines Western healthcare career training with traditional native Hawaiian healing practices such as <span aria-label=\"laau\">l&#257;&#699;au<\/span> <span aria-label=\"lapaau\">lapa&#699;au<\/span> (plant-based medicines), lomilomi (massage) for kupuna (elders) and the medically fragile, growing healthy foods in the M\u0101la <span aria-label=\"Ai\">&#699;Ai<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hoola\">Ho&#699;ola<\/span> nursing garden and <span aria-label=\"hooponopono\">ho&#699;oponopono<\/span> (conflict resolution).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_120610\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120610\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/windward-cna-online-3.jpg\" alt=\"nursing student and elder\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-120610\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/windward-cna-online-3.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/windward-cna-online-3-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/windward-cna-online-3-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-120610\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A <abbr>CNA<\/abbr> primarily takes care of kupuna<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students are prepared with the knowledge and experience needed to provide quality care for residents and kupuna in long-term care facilities, hospitals, home health care and hospice settings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jamie Kamailani Boyd<\/strong>, director of the Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> Indigenous Health Science program, created the online <abbr>CNA<\/abbr> credit program based on more than 12 years of success with students in the <abbr>CNA<\/abbr> noncredit program. The program is also designed to provide a pathway to the bachelor of applied science (<abbr>BAS<\/abbr>) degree in Hawaiian and indigenous health and healing at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8211;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;m passionate about preparing a highly trained workforce to care for the kupuna of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. In managing health science training as a pathway out of poverty, I am continuously pursuing support for our <abbr>CNA<\/abbr> so they may earn higher certifications, degrees and licensure toward a living wage in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said Boyd.<\/p>\n<p>Funding for the transition to an online from a traditional face-to-face format&#8212;preserving the unique cultural focus of the program&#8212;was provided by Windward <abbr>CC<\/abbr>\u2019s Kahua <span aria-label=\"Hoonaauao\">Ho&#699;ona&#699;auao<\/span>: Foundations of Knowledge Building, <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Department of Education Title <abbr title=\"Roman Numeral Three\">III<\/abbr> grant project.<\/p>\n<p>Program graduates are well prepared to meet the requirements for the state certification exam and to be successfully employed, or they can pursue a higher degree such as <abbr title=\"Licensed Practical Nurse\">LPN<\/abbr>, <abbr title=\"Registered Nurse\">RN<\/abbr> or <abbr>BAS<\/abbr> for health careers in public health, social work and traditional healing.<\/p>\n<p>Students who wish to advance their education have options. Completion of the <abbr>CNA<\/abbr> program is the first step in the <a href=\"http:\/\/nursingpathway.windward.hawaii.edu\/\">nursing career pathway<\/a>.
