He and his classmates were preparing to perform their original and group songs on stage at Palik\u016b Theatre in the Hanauna Mele series spring 2020 concert when the COVID-19 pandemic hit.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As a kid growing up in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, I never used to hear about shootings, and over the years the violence keeps getting worse,&rdquo; said Latorre, who graduated from Castle High School in 2018. &ldquo;That needs to stop. Let&#8217;s not get used to violence happening to our home. We can control our actions towards each other, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> needs more shakas being thrown, instead of fists.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_120600\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-120600\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/windward-music-latorre.jpg\" alt=\"Matthew Latorre\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-120600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/windward-music-latorre.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/windward-music-latorre-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/windward-music-latorre-93x130.jpg 93w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-120600\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matthew Latorre<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The assignment was designed to give students a voice and empower them to start a dialogue on issues of importance to them.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Needless to say, this semester, we had issues galore!&rdquo; said <strong>Kamuela Kimokeo<\/strong>, Windward <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> music instructor and director of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Music Institute. &ldquo;When our concerts got canceled this semester due to the pandemic, we had to be creative and think of a way to make sure that the songs and issues that my students wanted to give voice to, were heard.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Hanauna Mele biannual concert series features musical performances by students enrolled in <span aria-label=\"ukulele\">&#699;ukulele<\/span>, slack key guitar and Hawaiian ensemble courses. Students get the opportunity to play music with special guest artists such as Jerry Santos, Amy <span aria-label=\"Hanaialii,\">Hanaiali&#699;i,<\/span> Ledward <span aria-label=\"Kaapana\">Ka&#699;apana<\/span>, and other <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> music icons.<\/p>\n<p>Kimokeo describes music as a great tool of expression and empowerment. &ldquo;There is a Hawaiian proverb, &lsquo;Ma ka hana ka <span aria-label=\"ike\">&#699;ike<\/span>,&rsquo; which means in essence, &lsquo;One learns in doing,&rsquo;&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I want to empower my students with the sword of melody and truth.
