The microscope will assist researchers who rely on live-cell imaging to study cell movement and migration, which play a critical role in the growth, invasion, extravasation and metastasis of cancer cells.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Having access to this instrument will enhance biomedical research capabilities at the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center and at other units across the university,&rdquo; said <strong>Christine Farrar<\/strong>, director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/research\/shared-resources\/microscopy-imaging-and-flow-cytometry\">Microscopy, Imaging, and Flow Cytometry Core Facility<\/a>, where the instrument will be housed. This is the first time that this type of imaging system will be available in a core facility at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-uhcc-building-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"uh cancer center building\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-116496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-uhcc-building-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-uhcc-building-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-uhcc-building-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/manoa-uhcc-building.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The grant comes from the <abbr>NIH<\/abbr>\u2019s Office of Research Infrastructure Programs and is awarded to institutions to purchase equipment that would be too expensive for one researcher to purchase on their own. In order to be eligible for a shared instrumentation grant, an institution must have three or more researchers who demonstrate a need for the requested instrument to complete their currently funded <abbr>NIH<\/abbr> projects. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This grant provides funding for an advanced research microscope that will allow our researchers to probe the inner functions of cancer cells in greater detail than ever before. As a result, we will better understand the mechanisms that drive cancer cell growth, metastasis and survival, allowing us to devise new therapeutic strategies to treat and diagnose cancer patients here in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said <strong>Joe W. Ramos<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center deputy director.<\/p>\n<p>The grant application was a collaborative effort by members of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center\u2019s Cancer Biology Program and the <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/departments\/cmb\/\">John A.
