What&#8217;s worse, preventive measures are inconclusive.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2766430\">study published in <em><abbr>JAMA<\/abbr><\/em><\/a> by the <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Preventive Services Task Force (<abbr>USPSTF<\/abbr>) has concluded that current evidence is insufficient to make a recommendation regarding primary care-based behavioral counseling interventions to prevent illicit drug use (including non-medical use of prescription drugs) in children, adolescents and young adults. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_53077\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53077\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/manoa-jabsom-tseng-c.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"334\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53077\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/manoa-jabsom-tseng-c.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/manoa-jabsom-tseng-c-195x260.jpg 195w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-53077\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chien-Wen Tseng<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Contributing to the study is <strong>Chien-Wen Tseng<\/strong>, professor of family medicine and community health of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A, Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>). Tseng is a member of the <abbr>USPSTF<\/abbr>, which routinely makes recommendations about the effectiveness of preventive care services.<\/p>\n<p>Illicit drug use, defined as the use of substances (not including alcohol or tobacco products) that are illegally obtained or involve non-medical use of prescription medications, contributes to the leading causes of death among young people ages 10&#8211;24, including motor vehicle accidents, suicide and homicide.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We need a lot more research on this really important issue,&rdquo; Tseng said. &ldquo;It\u2019s unfortunate that we cannot yet make a recommendation for behavior counseling interventions for those who have never used drugs as well as those with early or experimental use.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The recommendation is consistent with the previous <abbr>USPSTF<\/abbr> statement in 2014, except that it now includes young adults aged 18&#8211;25. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More research is needed on this issue according to <abbr title=\"John A.
